so this maybe a stupid question, but how did you get LO to take a sippy cup?
I have every type, straw, rubber like bottle, other kind of rubber, etc. LO just chews on it all. I've been offering them filled with water at his meals. I hate to waste breast milk on it....I was thinking of putting a drop of Apple juice in there and then filling it with water to make it more tasty...
I have to go to 3 really long days of trainings an hour away in March and it would be difficult for my sitter to bring him to me to eat like we've done in the past for my trainings.
Thanks Ladies!
Re: Sippy cup training
Will he not take a bottle? If your ticker is correct, he's *really* young for you to expect him to take much, if anything, out of a sippy cup.
We started trying to get them to practice with sippies around 6 months, and they didn't get them at all until after 11 months (straw cups) and not until around 18 months for actual sippies that you have to tilt. They just got it one day when they were ready, and no amount of "training" on our end would make them do something they weren't ready for.
And our pedi said not to offer water with meals until around 9-10 months, or even later, to make sure they were getting enough nutrients from formula (or breastmilk in your case) instead of filling up on water.
No he won't take a bottle. I bought all the sippy cups that said 4 months on them.. I actually tried one of them in an attempt to see how hard they were, and man you have to suck pretty hard to get anything out!
He will drink out of a cup, it is just messy and I have no idea how much breast milk he actually gets.
If I could get him to actually take the sippy cup, I would switch out the water for breastmilk, but at this point he isn't getting anything out of it anyways.
Yeah, he's just honestly probably too young to get it yet.
You could have her feed him breastmilk out of a straw (like by using her finger on the end to get a straw full and then dripping the straw into his mouth). It would take forever, but at least you'd know that he got enough to eat.
Take the spout part out of the sippy cup and try it again. You know, that white or clear thing that blocks up the hole and makes them have to suck to get anything out? It won't make it spillproof but it's worth a shot.
i read this today when i was researching this exact topic. several sourcew said to take out the spill proof valve...
I have a nuk one....what does it look like?
*I don't think i'm asking too much since all the sippy cups say 4+ months, also I've heard a lot of mom's say that their babies that wouldn't take bottles would take a sippy cup around 6 months. I need some method of getting breast milk in him when I'm gone for 3 days in March, I think the bottle days have sailed for us, I tried from 4 weeks to 4 months to convince him to take a bottle with no luck.
*I'm definetly going to try taking the white thing out of the sippy cup. We have some that are like bottles, but I have one with valve in it and a soft spout. Hopefully since he'll drink it from a cup he'll drink it this way. Thanks!
you might try this cup. it is more natural and easier for a baby to drink from than a sippy cup and doesn't have any of the speech/ tooth decay issues associated with it, either. just pour a little in at a time in case of a spill and tilt it up so he can sip it and take as much or little as he wants.
i would definitely wait a long time before giving any kind of water or juice. babies given too much water can have seizures and most store-bought juices are all sugar/ hfcs so i think it would be best to just use a tiny bit of breast milk to practice.
That's exactly what I've been doing for 5 months or so now. I just started putting the little plastic valve thing back in again. Catie loves drinking from her soft-spout sippies, but even now after practicing several times a day for months I still wouldn't expect her to get anywhere near a meal's amount of liquid out of it. I consider it a success if she gets an ounce.
Sorry, but I'd really try to find some other way to deal with feedings during your training.
Maybe try this cup? You squeeze the liquid up the straw to help baby learn to use it. I would put a little breast milk in there or try water and juice combo.
