Houston Babies

Houston Swim Club?

Has anyone used Houston Swim Club for their child?  I'm a little confused by their process.  I'm wondering how much my 3-year old would learn in the 2-week initial session and how useful the monthly maintenance classes would be.  I remember as a child going each summer for 1-2 weeks.  Every year there were new skills to learn, etc.  At this age, I'm really interested in making sure she knows how to float and get to the side if she falls in.  I'm less concerned about learning all her strokes.

Anyone have personal experience with the Pearland location?  Any teacher recommendations?

 Thanks!

  • My DD is about to be two and we go to the Pearland location. I like the classes a lot and so does DD. (Although since I am pregnant DH is the one that gets in with her right now) I don't really know the process  for 3 yr olds, but we go once a week right now She started when she was about a year. She is still in the classes where parents have to be in the water with them.

Not too sure about floating, but as far as teaching them to help themselves if they fall in, they do start working on these skills early on, they do a "monkey crawl" on the side of the pool and other things as well and I know at some point there is a skills test.  I will have to ask my DH the name of the teacher that we have, but she is really good with the kids. However, she may only do the younger classes, I am not sure.

  • We use the Katy location. You can either do the 2week solid classes and then maintenence or do what we do which is just weekly classes. We chose to sign up for 2 classes a week. DS is in the 1st starfish class. So right now they are working having fun n the water, going under, as previous pp said the monkey crawl, floating on their back, being able to scoot off the side to the parent, get in and out of the pool themselves....

There are currently 5 children in our class and everyone is at different skill levels. They do test to see who gets to move on to the next level, but I don't know when they test. I know the little kids don't move to the big pool until they are 2.5 and have completed the skill set.

Everyone at my location is very nice and more than happy to answer questions. A friend and I went in before signing our kids up and took a tour and they explained everything and gave us all the paper work. That maybe what you want to do to get all your questions answered.

We went there last summer and my daughter was also in the mommy and me classes. We went once a week and we were really happy there. We went to Pearland Swim Academy the year before but like HSC much better. I'll be taking her again this summer and since she'll be 3 we can do the 2 week daily session and the the maintenance classes. I think we'll probably do once a week for the maintenance class.

I went to main campus at University Park.  Did you go there?  I'm not from PA; grew up in Dallas.  I know, weird...  My grandpa went to PSU and we actually have the same engineering degree.  Kind of a fun family legacy.

I was planning finishing my degrees from there in the fall of '09, but ended up moving down here instead when DH got a job here. Dh was going to the Harrisburg campus and that 's where I would have gone as well. We have a lot of friends and family who went to the Happy Valley  campus as well.

Which engineering degree did you get? Dh was working on his Mechanical Engineering BS when he took the job down here. he already had an AA in it, but wanted to get his BS, gt certified and then get his masters I think in business admin so he could be one of the bosses.
