I have the worst sore throat I can remember, some stuffiness, low-grade fever (100ish) and body aches. I am down two pounds since I weighed myself Sunday as it hurts to eat or drink. My GP stopped practicing at the end of last year, and my OB's NP (who does GP stuff) is out until next week. I'm breastfeeding and don't really know what to take, although I have taken the extra-strengh ibuprofin that I got after childbirth and it takes the edge off the sore throat, but doesn't make it go away. The stuffiness doesn't bother me, but the throat and body aches do.
Two of my coworkers have diagnosed cases of the flu, but I haven't been in to the office in a week.
I have a message in to the OB's nurse line for advice, and may go to a RediClinic type place, but insurance doesn't cover that so if I'm just going to get a "wait it out" diagnosis, I'd rather not spend the money.
Any advice?
P.S. I'm annoyed that daycare is making *me* sick. This is the 4th illness in 4 months. I knew the kids would get sick, but I'm catching more germs than they are. Better me than the baby, but still - I'd like some immunity, please!
Re: Diagnose me - flu or strep or something else...
My family has had the same thing for almost 2 weeks, except that we don't have a fever. Pedi says its a cold. I BF, too, but chanced taking MucinexD and it has been very helpful in draining my sinuses which means its not pooling while I sleep = less irritating to my throat. I also take Tylenol for the aches and pains. I haven't noticed any drop in supply and I looked it up on kellymom and Dr. Hale's site and they say its ok to take as far as the baby is concerned.
I hope you feel better soon.

We've been diagnosing quite a few people with both at the same time
You can take 800mg Ibuprofen every 6 hours. You can also take at the same time 1,000mg Acetaminophen(Tylenol) every 4-6 hours, not to exceed 4,000mg a day. Gargle with hot salt water. OTC throat numbing spray (Chlorseptic) or lozanges.
The sore throat could be aggravated by postnasal drip but I wouldn't recommend Sudafed while breastfeeding because it can dry you up.
