The daycare just called and said they think C has ringworm on his belly. I didn't see it this morning, so I don't know what this spot actually looks like. C has been on an antibiotic since last Thursday for an ear infection...do you think it could be linked to him getting ringworm? Also, I wonder if I can treat it with an over the counter anti fungal, or if I need to take him into the pediatrician (we go back on Feb 21st for his ear followup anyway). Anyone have any experience with ringworm with a 21 month old?
Thank you!
Re: Question about ringworm
I don't see how the ringworm could be correlated to the ear infection.
Yes, you can treat it with an OTC medication. We used Lotrimin AF -- which is found in the footcare aisle in the grocery store (it's used to treat athlete's foot). Our pedi said it is the same stuff that would be prescibed.
Do you have pets? We got our ringworm from our cat and had to treat him, as well. It was a major PITA!!

I obviously haven't seen it, but lots of pedi's confuse ringworm for nummular ("coin shaped") eczema. They do look alike. They areboth red, round, and scaly. To differentiate, eczema is usually itchy, whereas ringworm is not. Ringworm tends to be clear in the center with raised borders, eczema is usually the same throughout. If you take something and scrape it, ringworm will start flaking or getting more scaly, eczema will not. If you think it is ringworm, you can use OTC Lotrimin or Lamisil cream. It does take about 6 weeks for it to be fully resolved. If you think it's eczema (dry patch), you can use OTC hydrocortisone 2x day for 2-3 weeks. If you want, you can post or PM me a picture so I can help you better. Even if you put an antifungal on it either way, it may help because the cream part (the vehicle) of the antifungal will actually help the eczema b/c eczema essentially is dry skin. BUT if you put hydrocortisone on fungus, it will make it worse. Neither is related to an ear infection
