Parenting after 35

XP: Anyone deal with cervical dysplasia, abnormal colpos/Leeps/cone?

I am in a bind of sorts. I have been having some female issues....abnormal paps/colpos/LEEP since having my DS.My last colpo (4 mos after LEEP) is still showing severe dysplasia in the canal. My OBGYN is referring me to an gyno oncologist for a cold knife cone treatment. I am concerned on many levels, although I am told I do not have cancer...they just want to nip this before it turns into an issue. We want another baby, and would like to at least try sooner than later. We took a long 2.5 years of trying for DS with failed IF treatments (see siggy). I have no desire to go the RE route again, so we could be done if I don't get pregnant on my own again.I am 37 this year, not getting any younger. I fear that a cold knife will hurt any fertility I may have and make it impossible to have #2, not to mention the risks for pre term labor. We have enough issues, I hate to through scarring/thickening into the mix.I will go over my concerns with the specialist, but I am curious if anyone here has had this procedure. I will also ask the risk of getting pregnant and dealing with the issues after a baby is born. I don't want to be irresponsible or put my life at risk, but I also don't want unnecessary surgical procedures removing parts that I may need! Thanks!

  • No idea, but I hope you get some answers, either here and/or at your RE's, and a speedy BFP!

  • I went through all those procedures 7 years ago. We did have difficulty getting pregnant but they did not attribute it to those procedures. I was "undiagnosed infertility" so who really knows. We ended up having to go through IVF to get pregnant after 2 years of progressively more invasive infertility treatments.

Good luck! And I hope you have better luck than we did. Although, we now have a wonderful little girl!

  • I had mild dysplasia for about a year and then it went away. So I never had to get any treatment for it. But I know a girl who had the cone therapy performed. When she got pregnant, she had problems with the cervix opening, so just know that you might need to have your cervix closed with a cerclage until you deliver. Or you might need bed rest at the end. Or nothing might happen and you might not have any issues at all. Your doctor can explain the risks. Also, when you get cone therapy they take off tissue that produces that egg white fluid around ovulation. Since that fluid is necessary to conceive (it makes it easier for sperm to live and swim), you will probably have to use lots of lube when you have sex.

But honestly I think those are minor side effects compared to the risk of possibly developing cancer so if your doctor recommends the treatment, it's probably a good idea to have it. Good luck, I wish you the best!
