Harford County Daycare Wait Lists?

Hi, all!

In general, does the Bel Air area tend to be one where I should start looking for daycare like, yesterday?  It seems nuts because I've known about this pregnancy for all of 13 days.  If everything goes as planned, I'd need it after next year's Christmas holiday to start 2012.  I keep hearing about places with year long wait lists and figured I'd get a feel for my local zone!

Re: Harford County Daycare Wait Lists?

  • Congrats..we're in HArco but dont need daycare so I am not quite sure but from other friends who have it can't hurt to get on a waiting list when you can.  A lot of times they call you sooner.  A friend of mine was on a waitlist that was supposed to be 2 years and they called within months.

  • I can't speak for every area/county around Baltimore, but I think in general that people exaggerate the need to find daycare early in Harford County. It's not a bad idea to get yourself on lists before you have the baby, but I don't think you need to start looking quite this early.

We got on a center's waiting list in October and they had a spot at the beginning of January.

SIL only started looking a month before she needed daycare (although I thought she should have started earlier) and her center had an opening for her daughter right away.

If you're really concerned, I would call around to the places you're interested in and just ask them what they think.

  • Like in everything... it depends.  I am a planner so I felt the need to take care of this very early on.  But every place I called, told me it was way to early!  (Especially the in-home places.)

Probably the best thing you can do right now is to call around a few different centers and find out when they are having their next tour/open house.  Then go and visit a few places.  It will help you feel like you are doing something.  After you have visited a couple then you can decide where you want to "get on the list."

I stressed out a lot about finding a place for DD, but it the end I was really happy with our choice.

  • I agree with weezie. So many factors can come in to play (layoffs, moves, etc) that it's really hard to say if a daycare provider will have a wait list or not. Definitely call around and see what they have to say.

    Good Luck!

  • Thanks for the info, ladies! :)

  • Congrats!  I am a home daycare provider and I personally only take infant enrollment at the most 3 months before start date.  So many things can change for you and the provider.  In Maryland home daycare providers (single adult) can only take 2 children under the age of 2 (if there are two certified adults - then 4 infants).  I have not heard about wait lists, but I would contact Harford County's Child Care Links (they are located behind the festival shopping center).  Here is their website:
