so my baby is 9 days old and he has jaundice. he went under the lights when we were still in the hospital and his levels came all the way down to 11.9 so they set us home.
we did blood work yesterday and it went up to 12.9 so his pedi said to top him off with formula and that the formula will help flush out the jaundice. since giving him formula after breast milk all the formula comes up. it is white and semi lumpy bits.
i really dont want to use formula and the spitting up/puking gets me worried he will get dehydrated, so i stopped giving him the formula and only breast milk but pumping and measuring it out, logging it and keeping track of his intake.
i really hope his level comes down today, this is just making me a nervous wreck
*sigh*
Re: anyone with outside babies and have jaundice
K had level of 12 of jaudince when we left the hospital. I followed up with his pedi two days later...she told me as long as he was still eating and pooping like normal that it should go away. It did. I didnt have to supplement with formula at all.
Also putting him in the sunlight helps!
Agreed! Our pedi said the same...eating, pooping and sunlight. Good Luck!
Mia had jaundice when we got home and we had to have the light blanket delivered. She had to wear it for 24 hours to get the levels down but after that, she was fine.
I hated all of the doctor visits and blood draws.
Lena had it too. She was also under the lights in the hospital and I hated all the heel pricks and pedi visits. We had the same issue with the formula at first too. One of the things that made a difference for us was to not use the RTF bottles w/ the nipple that comes with them. First, we started putting the RTF in an avent bottle and that helped with the massive spit up. Then when we ran out of RTF, we used the powdered and seemed to have even less issue with that. Just feed like crazy and that pesky bilirubin should be gone soon! GL!
I also noticed that toing between bottle and breast, she needs to be burped for half of forever from the bottle and barely needs burped after BFing.
We had this happen as well-the spike after leaving the hospital. The MD's at the hospital wanted me to supplement as well but they said it could be pumped milk or formula. At the hospital we needed to do more formula as my milk hadn't come in yet. but did pumped breast milk after my milk came in-like 10-30CC depending on how well she had nursed.
Benefit of nursing first is she has to work to get milk started before she gets the easier bottle that way it didn't make her get lazy.
