If you eat Organic, pls come in! I have questions!

So, we'd like to start eating more organic, mainly because we want to feed ds organic food.   I just don't know where to start or what to look for.

I'm assuming something can be organic if it's grown, correct? Fruit, veggies etc?   What about meat?   They have organic fruits/veggies at my local grocery store, but I'm not seeing any organic meat, unless I'm not looking very well.

What else can I buy that's organic in terms of food? Snacks etc?

I'm totally clueless on it all, so any info or links would be great!

TIA!

  • True organic food is marked as such pursuant to FDA regulations.  In our store, we have a special section for organic produce and for other organic foods too (there's an aisle devoted to organic dry goods for example).  A great way to eat organic is to find local farms (since you're in Wisconsin, I'd assume that there would be great organic dairies nearby) and do either a farm share during the summer or order   Here's a farm I found by googling: https://www.eatwild.com/products/wisconsin.html

  • We buy the following organic foods:

    Meat

    Dairy.

The rest we just try to eat in moderation and focus on other things (like we try not to buy HFCS and such)

  • So many foods come in organic options now. I buy only organic dairy. Fruits and veggies, I aim for organic, but if I can't find that, I try to buy local. There are organic meats (if you have Wegmans, they have a good variety), but they are much more expensive. We have cut down on the amount of meat we eat because of this. One of my local stores has antibiotic- and hormone-free chicken, so while not organic, it doesn't have a lot of the crud that's in regular animal products. There are organic snacks, but I don't usually buy too much processed stuff, so I'm not as familiar with them.

  • In a lot of things I have read people can go overboard with organics! The biggest things to look for are meats, eggs and milk and veggies that you eat the skins. If you can do these things then you are doing great.

We get our meats from farmers markets and specialty grocery (similar to trader joes), Milk and eggs from any grocery and our produce is delivered to our door from door to door organics.. not sure all the states they are in.

Some meats we can get from local grocery store that are all natural, non hormone, etc., you just have to read labels... its hit or miss but its out there.

  • I highly recommend getting this book, it tells you absolutely everything you need to know as far as what the federal guidelines mean, which foods are most impacted by commonly used pestisides and other nonorganic practices of concern, and what to look for.

  • Thanks everyone!  This info is great, and I'm going to have to make a trip to our local stores to look better at what they have and check out some of those websites.

For my organic shopping I stick to Trader Joe's, not sure if you have one of these stores in your area.  The items I buy organic religiously are all dairy, veggies & fruits, eggs, and nuts.  As for meats I buy good high quality, I seldom buy organic meat since it's pretty pricey.

  • Look up the dirty dozen and clean 15(i think thats what its called)

Also if your wanting to be careful about the meat, organic doesn't cut it for us.

We buy grass fed beef which is soooooooooo much better! I am sure you can find some in your area.

Free range eggs are a must. Though I would buy from a farmer around and not in the store because their guidelines for free range is VERY different than what you think.
