I don't know how moms of big babies do it

My LO is now over 7.5 pounds at 5 weeks. He is so strong for a little guy--he flails and kicks and fights and it's hard to contain him, like when I'm bfing, for example. I've already hurt my wrist trying to turn him from one side to another. I can't even imagine having to do this with a 10 lb baby. At least I'll have time to build up to it--I don't know how moms of 10 lb+ babies do it!

  • I know what you mean. M is almost 17 pounds now, and he feels so heavy to me. I can't imagine carrying around a big 1-year old, but I'll be doing it soon enough.

  • DS is about 20lbs at just over 8mo old and diaper changes have been.... a challenge, let's say, for the past few months.

soon your DS will start getting distracted at nursing and you'll only be able to do it in a dark, quiet place (around 4mo old)

  • I don't know either. I do have to say that the baby seems lighter the second time around b/c you are used to toddler weight though. I remember being sort for months from carrying DS around all of the time, and he is little! I actually weighed him this morning b/c he feels light and hasn't been eating, and at almost 3, he is 27.8 lbs.

  • I'll tell you carrying around a baby and toddler is the best arm workout ever. I wish my arms looked this good when I got married.  I can't believe how cut they get.  Like everything else with motherhood, you find wells of strength and endurance you didn't know you had - so if your 25lb toddler wants to be held for hours, somehow you find a way and the strength to do it.
  • dd was 10lbs when she was born ;-P

    Rhys was 9lbs.

It was the only thing I knew, so I never knew any better.  Though, Ian was only 8lbs at birth (though he caught up pretty quickly) and I didn't think he was any easier than the other 2.  I think personality plays a big role :)

  • Lol. My 27 lb almost 2 year old is wanting to be carried again, which is NOT fun when you are pregnant and huge! My hope is that lugging the two kids around this summer is going to give me some great looking arms!

    Yes!  Totally!

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • DS is 19lbs and my arms are KILLING ME.  He doesn't sit unsupported yet so when we're at play group or something and he gets fussy, I have to carry him around.  Nevermind getting up and down carrying him.

My arms are going to look amazing come summer.

  • Seriously. I am having back pain every day and I have a little guy!
  • Lol...you know what they say though....big babies sleep more!  DS #1 was 6.11, #2 was 8.10 and #3 was 9.7

I hate to see what happens if I have a fourth!  To be honest, my 4 week old seems like a three month old to me which actually makes me a little sad...however, it isn't as nerve wracking this time.  I don't know if it's because it's my third or because he is so much bigger but I am much more comfortable with this one compared to my first.  And....he's not much of a fighter - he'll cry but he doesn't flail much which is nice.

And you are right.  You have time to get used to it and you will be stronger than any woman without children in no time!

  • We have no other choice LOL!

DS was 10 lbs, 2 oz at birth; 22 lbs, 5 oz at his 6 month checkup. My arms & shoulders are in pretty great shape! Can't imagine how crappy my back will be once he starts really trying to walk.

  • I keep telling myself I don't need a gym membership because toting around a 27lb 10 month old is enough exercise!
