Can breast milk cause constipation?

I know this may sound crazy, but I'm wondering if breast milk can make LO constipated?  He is having poppy diapers but not as often as a couple of days ago.  Maybe it's just something I ate that day?

Re: Can breast milk cause constipation?

  • A google search tells me no, it does not cause constipation and that the number of poopy diapers can vary wildy with babies depending on how their bodies absorb the nutrients. If their intestional tract is more efficient at absorbing the nutrients better that means less poopy diapers.

  • Breastmilk doesn't cause constipation, it's the baby's system that does. Baby's systems are just a little too immature at this point and needs to figure things out still. Wait another day or two. I used to give my first baby a small bit of apple juice to make him poop. When it came... it was a HUGE blowout of poop from his shoulders to his ankles. It was like a yellow suit only on the back half of him. Totally gross.

  • My Ped told me yesterday that BF babies do not always poop everyday.  We had a major decrease in the number of poopy diapers and he told us not to worry about it.

  • in the hospital they told us BF babies rarely if ever get constipated or have diarrhea.

just make sure your baby is peeing:)
