TMI for some: Well, that's a moodkiller (Mirena related)

Gearing up for super-sexy time on our romantic getaway Saturday night, and DH discovers my Mirena, almost completely expelled.

Super-sexy mood gone. Instantly.

I had felt nothing, had no idea. The "Y" part of it had caught up in my vagina, keeping it from coming all the way out

Part of me is really ticked off. My periods have been messed up & very irregular since October (mine never went away), and I had gone to my Ob in November, asking for it to be checked. He did an internal exam, but no U/S.
Now I'm thinking it probably dislodged sometime in Oct/Nov, and just took this long before it actually worked its way out.
I'm kicking myself for not insisting on an U/S back in November.

So basically we've not had any form of reliable BC since... well, whenever it actually dislodged, which is anybody's guess.

I'm going to my Ob this afternoon to be checked for any possible damage, since this thing was floating around in my body for who-knows-how-long, and figure out BC options & timing, since I'm assuming we'll have to go thru the 2ww before we can start a new BC method.

Once the initial irritation & freakout subsided, DH & I decided that although the timing is not ideal, if we somehow end up pg from this, that it's definitely a sign that God really wanted us to have a baby NOW (LOL), so we're good. Hey, I was a "surprise" and I turned out okay, right? (ha!)

Right now I just want to make sure that:
a) there's not been any damage done to my body
b) if I happen to already be pg, that baby hasn't been hurt by the IUD in anyway

I'll keep you posted!

FYI - in case you're wondering - even before this I wouldn't have recommended Mirena, and I definitely won't be getting it again. Just sayin'

  • That's scary. We put so much faith in our BC methods that when they fail us it's really eye opening. IUD/Mirena/Pill failures concern me because if a pregnancy results and one continues to use the BC method then the baby can be impacted. I certainly hope your OB finds that it just dislodged and there is nothing going on with your body as a result.

I know some ladies on here really like their Mirenas and my OB really encouraged me to get one but when I did some reading up on it I decided it just wasn't for me.

Sorry you had a mood killer on your get away. That stinks.

  • Oh geez! That would make me a nervous wreck but it sounds like you guys have a positive attitude about the idea of a possible BC fail lol Does this make you reconsider your plans of when you want another baby? I know a lot of people who once they had a scare they realized they actually wanted another baby sooner than later...

  • I worry about this all the time.  I'm really not ready for another right now and can't do hormonal BC, so I got the Paraguard.  I hope you find nothing is wrong and can get back on track.
  • How scary! I hope all is well at your doctor's appointment. I highly recommend natural family planning and would be happy to chat with you about it if you're interested!:) Good luck!
