Pregnant after a Loss

Dental Work While Pregnant

I am sitting here in excruciating pain right now, and I have a dentist appointment at 2:45.  I think I have a bad cavity or something--I can't eat, breathe, put hot or cold on it, etc.

Anyway, I am scared to death about the dentist.  I know they can xray if they double robe me, but I am scared about novicaine, etc.  I am so nervous that something will happen to the baby.

Any advice?  Or something to calm my nerves would be great...

Re: Dental Work While Pregnant

  • Oh no, tooth aches suck.  My dentist is holding off doing any dental work until I have the baby but I'm not in any pain.  You can't live with pain like that, so just get it done.  I'm sure it will be fine.  There's nothing worse than a tooth ache.  Good luck to you!

  • Novocaine is perfectly fine. My dentist is pretty into kids and so he did a lot of research and read studies in the affects of not only novocaine but laughing gas as well and both are shown to have no adverse side effects on the fetus.

I had two fillings put in at about 13 weeks and everything went great. Your doctor and dentist should be able to calm your fears as well. But my dentist didn't want me to get my other two wisdom teeth out because I couldn't get x-rays. So I have to wait till after the baby comes out... fine with me! Good luck :)

  • From what I read there is much less concern once you are out of the first trimester because all the major organs have developed.  Good luck.

  • I had a cavity filled w/ DD, and it was fine. The drugs they can give you aren't quite as strong, and it took them longer to numb me. What they will give you is safe for baby though. Hope it gets better...toothaches are the devil.

  • I would actually call your ob and see if they have a list to give you dentist.  Mine gave me one to give to them when I had an appt.  There are numbing meds that are "safer" and might make you feel better.  Good luck!
  • It's fine. They would rather wait, but you don't want an infection or root canal. just make sure you get a led apron for any x-rays
  • My doctor told me to not put off any necessary dental work. A cavity can get infected, which would be harmful to the baby.  If the cavity is so bad that you're already in bad pain, the dentist may not even need to do an xray.  He should be able to see it just by looking if it's that bad.  I had a minor filling done early on. My doctor also said novocaine is fine (local), just don't get gas.  Good luck:-)
  • What pp said, not having the dental work would be much worse for you & baby.  You & Baby will be just fine.  You need to be well for that baby :)

How have you been besides the tooth ache?  Did you find out what you are having?  We are having a girl.  I've looked on here sev times when I was out on bed rest to see if you were here.  I'm so HAPPY that everything is going good for you!! :)

Think positive thoughts, it will alll be for the best!!!

  • I had dental work done in 1st tri.  I didn't let them do xrays.  Not sure if they would have or not.  It took them a while because it was bigger than they thought from looking.

I had to remind them I was pregnant.  I also had to get a letter authorizing treatment by them from my OB.  THey told OB what they were going to do and OB okay'd it.

Good luck, hope it doesn't take too long!

  • I have a couple cavities to be filled and asked my doc about them. He said it was fine to go to the dentist, just no gas. I just plan to let them know (if it's not obvious enough) that I'm pg.
