Car seat recall - WWYD???

It looks like my car seat has a recall on it. When I read up on it, they basically say that they are going to send you a tube of lube to put on the adjuster to prevent it from sticking.

Would you buy a new car seat or use the lube?

  • Which car seats were recalled? I wonder if mine was one of them.

Some of the brands included were Maxi Cosi, Eddie Bauer, Cosco, and Safety 1st.

  • It would probably depend on what the problem is.  If it's somthing dumb (user errror) then I would not.  If there is something inherintely wrong with the seat, I would get a new one.

Here is what they say the problem is. Their solution is to put some lube on the locking mechanism to help it return to the locked position...

THE HARNESS LOCKING AND RELEASE BUTTON DOES NOT ALWAYS RETURN TO ITS LOCKED POSITION. A BUTTON THAT IS NOT IN THE LOCKED POSITION CAN ALLOW THE HARNESS ADJUSTMENT STRAP TO SLIP BACK THROUGH THE ADJUSTER AS A CHILD MOVES AROUND IN THE SEAT AND RESULTS IN A LOOSE HARNESS.

Sorry it's all in caps, I copied and pasted from the website!

So even if it clicks into place, it may not be locked?  I would not be comfortable with that.

  • I really want a new carseat so i would get a new one. But if i didn't already want a new one, i would use the lube.

Yeah I don't know if I would be comfortable with that either. It's sorta shiity that they are telling you to "fix" it when it might not even work.

I want one with a higher RF limit. Ours RF to 35pds right now. My thoughts are that I will have to buy another seat anyway, so I can put the younger baby in Simon's current seat when the time comes and then keep Simon RF longer.

That sounds kinda sketchy to me. I would buy a new seat. What if the lube doesn't work and the straps get loose? I would not like to find out the answer to that.

?In a filing with N.H.T.S.A., Dorel said, ?There have been no reports of center front adjuster failure in real world crashes, no injuries and no deaths reported to the company.? Dorel said it had received 143 complaints of the front harness loosening and was conducting the recall even though it feels there was no safety defect. Instead, it told the agency the restraints ?exhibited performance issues.?

143/bajillions of carseats sold still could very well be used error, kwim?

  • I'd use what they send you and just make sure it's actually working properly. If you still think there's a problem, I'd call the carseat company to see what they can do for you, then get a new seat.
