please tell me if this is normal

DD projectile vomited after feeding this morning.  She has spit up about once per day for the past few days, but this time it was projectile.  It has never happened before.  She was not upset about it, and didn't cry.  Of course, I looked online and am now freaking out that she has plyloric stenosis.  Please someone with experience tell me if this is normal or if I need to call the pedi.

  • I would call the pedi just to make myself feel better. Did you check her temperature?

  • Maybe see how she does after her next feeding? If its a one-time thing, I certainly wouldn't worry, but if it keeps happening, I would call the pedi.

  • If it was green (bilious emesis) I would call the doc immediately and go to the ER.  Otherwise, you may be safe to hold off for a while.  If it keeps happening repeatedly throughout the day or seems to be causing her pain or discomfort, then I would call too.  It could be reflux, too.  I still just have an inside baby, but I am a NICU pharmacist, so I see a lot of sick LOs.
  • The vomit wasn't green... it looked just like breastmilk.  She's spit up before, I just didn't like that it was projectile.  I'm going to watch her after her next feeding (we EBF).  Please keep the advice coming!

  • I had a friend who's son projectile vomited at least 3 times a day until he was 8 months old. His weight gain wasn't effected, he never was bothered by it, and the ped said as long as his weight was on track it wasn't a worry. It might be something your LO just has to grow out of! I'd keep track of it for a few days, and write down how many times it happens and about how many ounces you think was spit up. Then take that to your ped, and if it seems like it's significantly hurting your LO something will be done about it.

  • I remember seeing a website awhile back that had a picture of a "normal" amount of spit up. Unfortunately I cannot find it now, but the picture had a set of the plastic teething keys on a ring to use as a size example and the spit up puddle was about twice the size of those keys. My son spit up quite a bit one day and it really scared the crap out of me since it came out of his nose too, but his pediatrician said that was normal and the amount was also normal. Babies can spit up around 2 tablespoons at a time, which can make it seem like alot!
