Bakers come in!!! How much would you charge?

https://bakemeacakecarly.blogspot.com/2010/07/gerbera-daisy-polka-dots-baby-shower.html

If you were going to make this cake and then about 24 cupcakes?

I am just starting up an at home cake business and can never figure out my prices. What do you think? I was thinking close to $100.

Re: Bakers come in!!! How much would you charge?

  • Im not a baker but that seems too cheap, I would figure out the cost of supplies and how many hours it would take you, any packaging you would need for the final products. As a freelance designer all i know is you dont want to underpay yourself! =)

  • I am no baker either, but I would spend at least $150-200 for that cake. HTH

  • Now I am no baker but for my wedding cake alittle over a year ago it was $95. There was no detail really on it at all. It was 2 tier plain ivory buttercream with pearl piping around the tiers and no cupcakes. I would think a cake like this with cupcakes would be in the $175-and up range.

  • That seems really cheap, i bought a two tiered cake that served 100 that was blue with blue polka dots and on top was a modern looking pregnant lady and I paid $220
  • Depends on where you are, but I'm just outside Boston and there's a place down the street from me that charges $1.75 to $3 for a single cupcake (from simple to super fancy, like strawberry shortcake or frenchtoast). So I'd say you're underselling yourself as the cupcakes would be close to $50. I paid a out $500 for my wedding cake which was 3 layers and served I want to say 125.

I'm right outside of Boston as well, so it seems this is a little cheap on my end. I will have to crunch some numbers before I get back to them. I feel bad charging a ton because I am just starting up and such.

  • ugh I always have the exact same problem....The cake doesn't look that bad to make but I HATE cupcakes so always charge more for them. I think I'd also charge around 100 but again I always under charge.

  • Seems very low to me too... I think I'd expect to pay at least $200 for all of that.  $120-$150 for the cake and maybe $2-$3 per cupcake.

I'd add up all of the materials, add up the time it took you and multiply that by your labour rate. If you're just starting out and want to do it just as goodwill, then charge lower for the labour.

I know. I feel like I under charged the girl who referred this guy the first time and now I am in a pickle. But I can change that all now.

PS - your cakes look so good!

  • Yes, $100 is way to cheap especially if you do it just like the picture and use fondant. I'd say at least $200 no matter where you live.

  • How many hours will it take you?  I think that seems low.

  • I am also just starting to do a little bit of catering, and I got some great advice from a friend of mine who owns a business. She said I should be charging my minimum cost times 3. So, if it cost you $75 to buy all the supplies to make the cake and cupcakes, then you should charge $225. I know what you mean though -- I feel like I don't want to charge too much because I'm just starting out! Good luck -- and keep us posted! I am making 12 cupcakes and some crostini to bring to a spa night tomorrow. And I am catering a salon opening next weekend!!
