Circus for a two year old?

The circus will be in town right around DD's birthday.  This also lines up with when my in-laws will be in town.  They want to do something special and were thinking the circus.  I think it is a wonderful gift and idea, but I am not sure if a two year old would be able to handle it.  I don't want to shoot them down immediately, but I wanted to get some input from other moms out there.  I honestly don't know if DD would be able to handle it or not.  Your thoughts and experiences?

Thanks!

Re: Circus for a two year old?

  • I don't think my 28-mo old would be able to sit still for it but she's super-active; it depends on how active your 2y.o. and what her attention span is.

I know a lot of little ones might get scared of the animals, too (not to mention the clowns).

  • Which circus?  I've taken my kids to the circus at various ages.  If it's Ringling Brothers I wouldn't take them.  It's a REALLY long circus and frankly pretty overwhelming.   We took DD#1 around 2 1/2 and probably should have waited a lot longer.

Big Apple circus is more manageable.  It's shorter, smaller and better for toddlers.

  • I think we are going to wait.  If Sesame Street or Yo Gabba Gabba comes to town then we may get tickets, but I have too many questions about the Circus.  I think we will wait another year.

    Thanks!

  • We went to Ringling brothers last year when DS was about 20 months and he did fine. I'm not sure he really "got it" but he had fun, sat on my lap for it with minimal squirming.
  • I highly recommend the Big Apple Circus. Its a smaller circus (1 ring, every seat is great you will see everything up close no matter where you sit) with only a few animals (horses, dogs). It more about the clown (Granny) and the acrobats. It was at Dulles last year.  I took my DD when she was a very active 18 months and she sat through the whole thing.
