cerclage ladies... how often do you get cervix check ups

hi everyone!  happy valentine's day!!

i was just wondering how often you guys with cerclages get u/s to check your cervical length.  my doctor said i didn't need one between weeks 21 to 29!!  i would have my regular ob appt, but no u/s to check on my cervix.  is this a little ridiculous?

Re: cerclage ladies... how often do you get cervix check ups

  • I have a transabdominal cerclage (although it probably doesn't matter) and I get cervix checks (u/s) every other week from 16w to 26w.  I requested they do a couple more at 28w and 30w because I delivered my son at 26w and I'd feel more comfortable going a little longer for peace of mind.

I don't see why you wouldn't get one from 21-29 weeks. Are you sure you heard him right? That is like the prime time to get them IMO!

  • I had my cerclage placed at 20 weeks, didn't go back until 23 weeks. My next appointment is at 28 weeks.  I too was a little surprised by the length between the appointments.

  • i was biweekly from the date i had my cerclage put in.  i had sudden shortening at 23 weeks...so now i have weekly cervical checks every wednesday!

  • for now I see the peri for a cervix check u/s every 2 weeks.
  • After an emergent cerclage placed at 20 weeks I had weekly cervical checks up until 28 weeks. I'm now officially on the a 2 week schedule!

  • I had mine placed at 14 weeks. I go every other week to have it checked. It seems odd to me that they wouldn't want to check at least every other week. I had 24 weeker twins and I am now 24 weeks, it makes me feel more comfortable just knowing that everything is fine.
  • I go every two weeks as long as things are perfect. If my cervix a has any changes it will be once a week.

  • I had a preventative cerclage at 14 weeks.  At 18 weeks, I started biweekly scans.  I have had a few weekly thrown in b/c of some contractions.  As long as my length continues to stay above 3cm she will stop the scans at 29 weeks.

  • I had an emergent cerclage at 21 wks and going for weekly u/s.  Probably until 28 wks then will switch to every 2 wks.

  • thanks for all your responses ladies!  my cerclage was preventative and i was, more or less, getting biweekly scans between weeks 14-21.  i don't understand why my ob doesn't want to continue doing them.  as some of you said, 21-28 weeks are probably the most crucial weeks!  well, i'm scheduling a scan before my regular appt next friday.  i don't care what he says.  peace of mind is priceless.

  • To add....my OB says (and i've read it on research) that 24 weeks is the most predictive measurement on preterm births and how to treat the rest of the pregnancy so I am surprised he's stopping also.

  • I had a preventive cerclage placed at 14 weeks then had an ultrasound at 18 weeks. I am now 19 weeks and my doctor has not even mentioned doing a routine check of my cervix.  He scheduled me for a monthly appointment as usual.  I had my daughter at 28 weeks after going into labor with her at 20 weeks. I was on complete bedrest in the hospital for 8 weeks before she came.  Should I be questioning why I am not getting routine cervical length checks??
  • toniapace2010-  i would definitely request for routine cervical length checks considering your previous pregnancy with your daughter.  i know there is a higher success rate with preventative (as opposed to emergent) cerclages, but you just never know.  i'm a worrier though so i'm always thinking the worst.  good luck!
