Thinking of getting a La-Z-Boy instead of a glider...

I am 6'1 and my husband is 5'11. I was intending to use my grandmother's antique rocker until yesterday, when I actually sat in it and discovered it is way too low for me to get up and down from comfortably. So now I need a chair. We are thinking La-Z-Boy b/c of its comfort and quality and versatility. I was wondering if any of you have gone this route...

  • We got a la-z-boy for the nursery and I am very happy with it though I have not been able to test it with LO yet.  We liked it so much that we bought another one for our living.  So comfy.

  • We went this route for the chair I believe I'll be in the most.  I did put a rocker in the babies room, but I don't think I'll be in there a ton.  Most of the time I'll go downstairs and sit in our La-z-boy.  I say go for it!

  • We have one in LO's room.  It's amazing.  It was so comfortable and perfect when I was nursing.  Now she's going through the 4 month wakeful (ugh) and it's so awesome to rock her to sleep in it and then be able to just nap there myself with her on my chest.

  • We couldn't afford a La-Z-Boy, but we went with a chair from Ashley Furniture, a rocker recliner.  It's amazing.  Can't wait to use it!!!  A lot of people suggested that we go this route!

  • Our La-Z-Boy is due in at the end of the month and I cannot wait!

Just a note, my husband is 6ft and he didn't like the first one you chose.

We ended up getting the Griffen. However, with the custom fabric, shipping, and stain protection it ended up being like $1100.  We plan on moving it to our den after we get its use for the baby.

  • My husband is 6'5 and I am 5'9 and we couldn't find a glider that was suitable for both of us so we got a rocker/recliner instead. We went to La-Z-Boy and was very disappointted at the prices and selection. All of their chairs were either small, ugly, or over priced so we went to Ashley Home Furniture instead and picked out a beautiful rocker recliner for $399. We love it. It is big enough for my husband and super comfortable.

I never would have spent a penny at La-Z-Boy though. All you are buying is the name. The one we got was nicer than any other chair at La-Z-Boy and at least half the price.

I'm sorry, I find your post hilarious. You're entitled to your opinion, but LaZboy was the best deal around here. I paid $450 for mine. The Ashley rockers were all complete junk. They had a hitch in the rock. Not all of them of course, but a couple I noticed it on. When I asked the sales person he stuttered and stammered and said that they were old and abused or some b.s. like that. I went to an independent furniture store who also sold Ashley furniture and she said they're fine if you want a chair for a couple of years, but that the rocking mechanism was not great and that, yes, that hitch I felt was common in their rockers. I know someone who worked at Ashley and even he admitted that Ashley furniture is for the most part "temporary" furniture. That's fine if that's what you want... I'm not knocking anyone's financial situation or what they can afford. I've looked in Ashely plenty for furniture.

I have no stock in LaZboy, I'm just over the moon excited with our rocker recliner from there. You are absolutely NOT just paying for the name. My LaZboy was cheaper than comparable Best and Lane chairs. We paid $450 and have a lifetime warranty on the frame and mechanism. What kind of warranty does Ashley have? I have NO idea what kind of Lazboy store you went in also... my husband is 6'2" and had absolutely no problem finding a chair that was big enough. They had easily 10 times the selection of chairs than Ashley did. They had sizes ranging from small to giant...

  • Oh yeah, OP- I obviously love my Lazboy. I got the "Melanie", which was the smaller version of the "Gibson". I'm only 5'1" though and had a problem with chairs being TOO big and the head rest hitting on top of my head and shoving it forward... it was weird. So mine is a really small one. You'll definitely want to find a lazboy showroom though and try them out, especially for people on the extreme short or tall end of the height spectrum. :) I was completely amazed at how two chairs that looked similar could fit so completely differently. DH is 6'1" and fit comfortably in many more than I did. So I don't think you'll have a problem finding one, you'll just want to be sure it fits. It was $200 cheaper for me to order in my local lazboy store also, as opposed to online. We got one in its "stock color" as well which saved a ton. As soon as you add custom fabrics, even in the same grade fabric as the model, it raises the price significantly. I also found that lazboy stores had different pricing.

  • We have a leather rocker/recliner (also swivels) in DS's room. One of the best decisions we made. I can't tell you how many times we've had to "sleep" with him in that chair...there's no way I would have been able to do that in a glider thing. Oh, and DH is 6'5" and I'm 5'8"...there's no way DH would have been able to use a glider.

  • We got our La-Z-Boy at Boscov's on sale for $200.  I'd given up hope on getting one because they were pricey.  But $200 in the perfect size and color.

  • Thanks for your help ladies :) I went in today and actually picked one out and it was on MAJOR sale. Normally it's like over 900, but I got it for 400.00. As for Ashley furniture, I have ordered things from them in the past and not been happy with their services or quality. But, I have also known plenty of people that are perfectly happy with Ashley Furniture, so it might just be me. I do know I have had my La-Z Boy in the den for almost 10 years and it's still looks and feel brand new.

  • We got a lazboy for the nursery.  It matches our family room sofa so when we are done with it in the nursery we will move it to the family room.

I have to disagree as well.  My Dad has always bought LaZBoy furniture and it lasts on average 10 yrs at his house, the LaZBoy couch he has is almost 15 yrs old and still feels new.  Most of the time with big brands I agree with the sentiment of you're paying for a name, but I don't at all when it comes to furniture.  Sometimes spending a little more up front is worthwhile in the long run because you are getting a better quality.  If you like to buy new furniture every few years then somewhere like Ashley is fine, but ultimately you are spending the same amount of money.

The Maverick was my first choice after going in there, but it was too big to fit where I wanted it to.....very nice chair though and super comfy.

  • I didn't like the aesthetics of the La-Z-Boys, but think they're great chairs. After much deliberation between different gliders and chairs, we got this Best Chair rocker/recliner. It's divinely comfortable and was worth spending the same amount of money as the La-Z-Boy as we can easily integrate it with our other furniture when we're done having kids.

  • We got this La-Z-Boy recliner and have been using it for about 6 months now.  I absolutely love it.  It was supposed to go into the nursery, but it never left the living room and it's now the favorite spot to sit.  It is a smaller recliner, but we are both thin and tall and find that it is perfect for us (I'm 5'10, DH is 6'2).  I use it multiple times a day to nurse.  The only thing that I don't like about La-Z-Boy recliners is the super loud noise when you go to put the footrest down.  I've found the trick so that it doesn't make the noise, but at first it was super annoying.  We looked everywhere for a recliner, and the quality of everything else was absolute garbage.  If you go to the La-Z-Boy website, you can find stores that carry their products.  We called all of the stores in the area to see who had the best price.  I hope you love yours as much as we love ours!
