1st Trimester

Possibly goodbye and advice?

Well the last couple days have been a seriously been messing with my mind. On Thurs the OB told me the baby is not progressing (we have all the structures but no baby ? this is my 2nd u/s) and it looks like blood is filling the uterus and I will be miscarrying but she wanted to get my beta work up and give me the results on Friday. I'm having no symptoms of a mc (No cramps and no spotting). So Friday comes w my beta results and the DR says I'm "in range but on the low side" so basically they want me to do MORE beta workups on Monday and if it goes down then they are inducing the m/c if they go up at all they want to follow me for another 2-3 wks. If they go up at all it could just indicate that my hormones are moving at a much slower rate. It has been horrible and I have gone through every emotion. Anyways, has anyone heard of this where your hormones just rise at a slower rate?

Re: Possibly goodbye and advice?

  • Oh wow- that sounds like a super traumatic emotional rollercoaster!! I'm SO sorry you're going through this. I have no advice to offer, but I do want to make sure you know thoughts and prayers are going your way. Please keep us updated. I hope it's for the best, but either way, positive thoughts your way.

  • I think betas do slow down when they're high, meaning they don't necessarily double every 48-72 hours, but rather take longer (up to 96 hours) to double.  I'm sorry you're in limbo and hope you can get some answers soon.  Is your doctor willing to do another u/s this week to see if there's been progress since last week?

We are going to decide after these betas. So if these betas go up at all we will do an additional u/s but if they go down at all they want to induce a m/c.

  • I am so very sorry for what you are going through.

I have heard of betas being slow to rise (and they do rise more slowly once they reach somewhere around 20,000 I think), but at 8 weeks, there should be a visible baby and heart beat.

Is it possible that your dates are off and you're not as far along as your ticker states?

If you do end up needing it, the miscarriage and TTCAL boards are extremely supportive and helpful.

  • If you are having a missed m/c, it is still possible for your levels to rise. I've had two missed m/c. Though pregnancies seemed perfect, but the baby stopped developing. The doctor explained that the cells that create the placenta and sac were normal, which is why my levels rose and I was not symptomatic of a m/c. The cells that divided to create the baby, however, were likely abnormal, which is why the baby died. My body was still producing the hormones because those parts of the pregnancy were normal. I hope that you get good news, but after two u/s, I think you should be cautiously optimistic.

That sounds fair.  Even if your betas fall and you're not sure (or just need more confirmation), it's worth asking for another u/s.  My doctor offered me one while I was waiting to miscarry (as it took a couple of weeks for the m/c to start after we'd confirmed that it would happen with falling betas) and it helped me to be able to be absolutely certain that things weren't going to improve.  It also allowed me to be able to mentally set a D&C date if the m/c didn't happen by a certain date.  I hope for you that you never have to cross that bridge and that your baby is growing just fine in there.

  • My sister had a similar experience with her first m/c. Although it could turn out differently, I would have to advise to prepare for the worst. She held on to every last possible hope and it devastated her in the end. I am so sorry that you're going through this and hope you have lots of support. Thoughts & prayers.
