First birthday party - favors?

I am trying to think of a creative favor for DD's first bday party. I don't mind doing personalized favors based on the kid's ages since they will range from 6 months to 6 years old. Any ideas on favors for the babies, toddlers and school aged kids? Not really doing a "theme" other than pink, blue and brown colors to match the invite and having pictures of her throughout her first year everywhere. I just didn't find a theme I didn't want to use as she gets older and more likely to enjoy/appreciate the theme.

What did you do for favors at your LO's first bday?

CallmeKel, do you have a blog or link to all the amazing parties you've hosted?

Re: First birthday party - favors?

  • The favors I like getting the best are cookies.  I think decorated sugar cookies are lots of fun.  Anything else usually just end up making a mess then tossed in the trash.

  • I should add the favor I am thinking of is this super cute one we got at a party a few months ago (and only 2 kiddos from that party will be there, including the birthday girl). The mom sewed these rollup crayon holders for each kid and gave those with a coloring book. Now, I know the 6 - 12 month old babies won't care but the older ones (who will remember) might enjoy those, yes? Plus, I am keeping DD's for when she gets older so it's still a great favor in my eyes.

I prefer useful/functional favors or edibles ones like Charlotte recommended. Sugarboo cakeballs are high on my list too.

  • I didn't do favors for either 1st birthday party. Though at E's I did pass out the balloons to the older kids. To me a first birthday is more like an adult party than a kid party and I never thought to do favors... But then I didn't do them at my wedding either so maybe I'm a bit anti-favor. I did them for 2yr and 3yr parties though.

  • I guess I'm sort of anti-favor too. I usually skip them and when we do get them at parties they almost always go straight to the trash. But for DD's 2nd birthday party I baked mickey mouse-shaped sugar cookies and spread icing on them. Then I let the kids decorate them at the party with different kinds of sprinkles and things like that and take them home. We had about 10 kids there from age 1-8 or so and they all seemed to enjoy it.

I'd go for cake balls over the crayons.

  • I got these sheets of labels from Paper Source and printed "This book belongs to __________" on them, then packaged them up in cellophane bags with a ribbon.

We didn't really do a theme either, just orange & pink polka dots, so I did the labels in those two colors.

    These were awesome!

For T's 1st, I did the small Dr Seuss board books for the small kids and small age appropriate books for the bigger kids. I have also gotten books as favors and that is always appreciated. At the young age range, you can get cute books at the Dollar Store.

Coloring stuff is always great. One year a friend have crayons shaped like cup cakes. Little coloring/activity books always go over well.

    Stickers.

Believe it or not, both my kids LOVE the little rubber bouncing balls. There are larger ones that light up or are full of sparkles. Kids will play with those forever. We have given and rcvd these and they are always a hit.

  • we did bubbles.

there weren't many kids at dd's first bday, so i wanted to keep it low key. parents appreciated the "non sugar" token and the kids liked getting a toy.

I got them on the mini social for 50 per dozen.

There are a few babies in her party though, and I still don't know what to do about those favors, so thank you very much for posting this question.

  • We did cookies.  My mom was nice enough to make them.  Personally, I love the idea of getting cookies because our house is shrinking as it is.

  • We did little bags with pencils, plastic ball full of candy, whistle (it was a March Madness theme), and stickers.

Unfortunately, very few took a bag on the way out, so I was left with most of them!  I would recommend giving them out as they walk in the door, so they aren't forgotten.

  • We did bubbles and little bags of pink and purple M&M's (the color theme of her party). We gave out cookies to the adults.

  • We went to a party where they wrapped small paper-back children's books in white paper with theme-color ribbons. It was very nice, and you can always find room for another book.

Amazon has these 3 for 2 sales on books that make the price work out a little better.
