What would be considered first morning feeding?

DS has been nursing around 5:30a then again around 8:30a.  Which of these would be considered his first morning feeding?  I am wondering because I was told to pump after the first morning feeding because that's when I will be able to get the most to start building a stash.

Re: What would be considered first morning feeding?

  • 5:30 sounds like the first morning feeding to me, but that is totally based on reading this question and deciding right now that it sounds right, without ever having nursed or at this point given birth. :)

  • I would say the 5:30 one

  • I would consider the 5:30 feeding the first morning feeding BUT when DS was little, I wanted to do a morning pumping session to build supply/stash and I pumped after our later morning feeding (so the equivalent of your 8:30 feeding) and did just fine with supply and stash.  So you may want to try that first to buy yourself some more sleep!

  • whichever follows the longer sleep period.  If you are nursing at 2:30 as well it won't make a difference-  it is basically the first feeding after the longest break between

  • i get the most milk whenever my longest stretch without nursing is. So say I last nursed at 1am then got up to nurse at 530 I would have more milk then compared to another feeding at 830. however if I had just nursed at say 330 then again at 530 I would have more to pump at the 830 feeding. But that's me. When i went to my breast feeding class the LC suggested pumping after feeding for 10 minutes to help build a stash. For me that gets to be a little bit of a pain so I typically do like every other feeding during the day.

  • I would say that the 5:30am feeding is the "first" if the last time you fed him or pumped was longer than 3 hours.  So, I'd go with the longest stretch between feedings.  If they are all equally spaced, I say take your pick!
  • Well, I EBF via bottle at night, and after I give DD her bottle, swaddle and put her to sleep, I put her down and break out the pump. It only takes a half hour to change, feed, swaddle, sleep, and pump milk at night, and I always get 5-6 oz total out of each pumping session- and with 2 pumpings at night, and only using one 3ox bottle out of that, I have a good 6-7 oz to store away every morning. My freezer is rapidly filling with frozen milk! This works for me because I don't like leaving my older two to their own devices, and pumping at any time during the day would force me to do that. (I ain't gonna pump in front of them!)
