For the past 4 weeks or so, Lucas has been waking up 2-3 times per night. We thought he was going through a growth spurt, but he would refuse bottles. Our pedi said no teeth are even close to coming in. When he wakes up, it not like a painful cry. It's more of a "I'm bored, come get me cry". We cover him up, so it's not like he's cold. And his diaper isn't overly full.
He usually goes right back down once we go in there and pat his belly for a few seconds. I think he just wakes up and misses us.
So my question is, should I try to let him CIO? Will this help? hurt? Has anyone done CIO?
Re: Waking up at night/CIO question...
That's a tough one because there are many different beliefs. What's worked for us is letting DS CIO. Luckily Jack has never cried for an extended period of time, so that really made it easier on us. I would say the longest he's cried...and I mean the hard kind of cry, would be like 20 minutes.
As long as you know he's fine, (no dirty diaper, isn't cold, etc...) I think it's perfectly fine to let him learn to put himself back to sleep. In the long run it will be better for all of you:)
Most CIO methods, when done properly, involve doing what you are currently doing. The important difference is that you don't go in the room immediately when your baby starts crying. Wait 5 or 10 minutes, go in and calm them or pat them (the important thing is to NOT pick them up), and then leave the room. If they start crying again, wait 5 minutes longer than you did the last time and then go in and do the same thing again.
I think the maximum time that is advocated to wait is 30 minutes, at least in the Ferber method. The key is to make your visit into their room after waiting some time, and making the visit as boring as possible. Don't talk much to them, don't turn on lights, etc. We did CIO with Justin at around 6.5 months, and he was STTN in 2 nights.
You do have to be consistent with your routine, but it does work for a lot of babies. Listening to them cry is hard on everyone, but it worked for us. Good luck, I know it is tough to decide what to do.
I love your new siggy pic!
