Refusing to eat?

The past week Abby has refused to eat.  She's not sick, has all her teeth, she hasn't been acting any differently, she just will.  not.  eat.

For example, today for breakfast she had 1/4 of a slice of toast with peanut butter. She'll drink some milk but refuses to have her lunch.  It's like this every day.  Is this a 2 year old phase?

Re: Refusing to eat?

  • Ah yes. Max goes through the same thing. I supplement with Pedia Sure or Boost, so at least he gets some nutrition during the day. But I give up on fighting with him to eat. If/When she is hungry, she will eat.

  • We don't usually go more than a couple of days max, but Liam has definitely had periods this year when he has not wanted to eat.  I can't tell if it's a control thing, or if it's because he's just not hungry, but as long as he doesn't seem out of sorts in any other way I've just let it go.

As long as Abby feels fine and seems ok otherwise, I probably wouldn't worry too much.

  • Oh yes, it definitely goes with the age. Nicholas was a horrendous eater from about 20 months old until his 3rd birthday.  The week before Thanksgiving last year he literally did not put  single morsel of food in his mouth for four days.  I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown from the stress of putting him to bed night after night with a completely empty stomach.  Like all phases, it passed. Don't worry, she won't starve herself to death,

  • Yup, 2 year olds have better things to do than eat! lol They sometimes even lose a little bit of weight during this time. Just keep giving her different food options, she will eventually eat! If there are any concerns at any point, just communicate it with her pedi.

  • That's how Zachary eats EVERY day. He refuses breakfast each morning. He eats lunch at school. His dinners are mediocre. He still maintains his weight so I am not concerned. Oh, and like Lauren I use Pediasure if necessary but that stuff is pricey and has a ton of sugar. if they are hungry they will eat....

  • Sophia has gone through this on and off since turning two. She has a few months where she eats really well and then follows that with a few months where I feel as if she is hardly eating a thing. It seems to bother me more than her and so I try to just breath, let it go, and keep offering it to her. The hardest part is my reaction to it. If I am hungry - she must be, too, right?

The someone said above - sometimes they are too busy to eat. Too busy wanting to do what comes next. Just try and make sure that what she is actually eating is good for her. Like Lauren, I have also started on the Pediasure for breakfast. We call them "batidos" in my house. :) She drinks that, eats her vitamins, etc - it makes ME feel better.

    :)
