Since I have to buy 3 car seats, I cannot do all Britax ones because my budget does not permit. Has anyone found any car seats they like just as much or more that I can keep son rear facing in for a few years? I do not want to compromise safety, but I assume that there are other totally safe options out there.

Re: Besides Britax - other extended rear facing options
Bar tab = $156,000, Bus to Foxwoods = $0, Puking in the Stanley Cup = Priceless
Evenflo triumph advanced has great ratings and my graco ride sixty five has good ratings too.
the evenflo i believe goes up to fifty pounds and the graco one goes to sixty five so we wont feel the pain of purchasing two boosters at the exact same time later.
Seats are outgrown rear-facing when there is 1" of shell above their head. My cousin's LO rides in a Triumph and he easily rear-faced until 2. He could have gone longer, and she has the 50lb Triumph and not the 65lbs.
FWIW, for the people that are hoping that they won't have to buy another seat, that won't always be the case. Most children will never see 65lbs in a seat. They will outgrow it by height way before that. My DD rides in a Britax Roundabout 50 and 2 Marathons. She is on the second strap setting (I believe there are 5?), the seat will expire before she comes anywhere near the weight limit. She will likely not ougrow it by height before it expires either.
However, if you have a taller child, you still may need to purchase a booster later. Possibly even a harnessed booster.
As far as self adjusting straps, I am not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean you want a seat with an infinite harness?
Nope. There are no convertible seats that have harnesses that self adjust like an adult belt.
For extended rear facing I would check out the Graco My Ride 65 (40 lbs.), The First Years True Fit (35 lbs.), the Cosco Scenera 40RF (40 lbs.), or a Sunshine Kid's Radian 65, 80, or XTSL (40, 40 and 45 lbs., respectively).
ETA: Ditto that most seats are outgrown by height, not weight first.
IMO, carseats have changed a lot in the last 2 years. I bought a Marathon 2 years ago for DS because I needed a tall seat and wanted to ERF. Other manufacturer's have caught up with Britax and their features aren't as unique anymore. I think there's several new seats on the market that are just as good but not as expensive. I bought the Safety 1st Complete Air a couple of months ago but many people say it is big RFing. It has taller shell than the new Marathon.
I like to reference The Babycenter Community's carseat group--there's lots of good info from those ladies!
i believe the evenflo triumph lx has auto adjust straps.
