The nice weather yesterday has gotten me excited and looking foward to spring and getting into lawn projects. When we looked at the house in the fall, the yard was full of crabgrass so that will be my first issue to deal with.
There is a lot I will *eventually* like to do but first things first. Do any of you have any recommendations of landscape and fence companies? I'm having a hard time figuring out what should be priority #1, both are going to be expensive, but what are your thoughts?
1. We need a fence (2 dogs, 1 child).
2. Tree's and landscape in general. It's a brand new home so it has the standard 1 tree that the builder has put in. I need advice on what tree's to plant and where in order to provide the most privacy.
Would you put up the fence first or get the tree's in the ground? We won't do both this year so which would you do? My thinking is to get the tree's in the ground so they can start growing, but then I think how much is one year really going to make in terms of growth?
Company recs? TIA.
::Edit:: does anyone use a rain barrel? Can I hook a hose up to it to use a sprinkler or just a hose to water with a spout?
Re: Landscaping/Companies Q
I would do the fence first, for the privacy and safety of your child and your dogs. Plus, the fence placement may affect your landscaping decisions such as where to put trees, etc.
Don't forget to check with your HOA before adding a fence -- many HOAs have guidelines/restrictions, or simply want to give you an ok before you do a "major" project like that.
No recs for a company, though -- our fence was here when we bought our house.

Good point Amy, I didn't really think about this!
We bought some trees at Affordable Trees in Westfield. Seriously the cheapest place I found, but we were just replacing 2 trees that died, not planning a space for new ones.
My parents used Greenscapes Indy for their landscaping plan. Basically, the landscape designer comes to your house and draws up a complete plan for your landscaping and you DIY. He tells you exactly what to plant where, including where to buy it. You can do it on your own pace and whatever your budget allows. I think the entire plan cost them around $350, but they are completely happy with it. If your budget allows, I think you can have them do all of the work for you too.
Everyone in my neighborhood seems to use Glidden Fence Company. Our fence was put in by them by the previous owners of our house and it's held up great.
Some of our trees came from Affordable Trees in Westfield but the others came from https://www.bergerhargis.com/ (ps my husband works there so im partial to them)
We ended up putting up our own privacy fence but my DH said he wishes he would have paid for it to be done. It only took them two days but the ground was really hard so they had to dig the post holes with a shovel
If you have crabgrass you will want to take care of that early because its hard to get real grass to grow if crabgrass is taking over. Good Luck
