Anyone have a pool

We are looking at houses now and really like one that has a pool.  I would love to have one but afraid it will be a lot of work and costly to keep up.

Do you like yours?

Would you buy another house with one?

Pros and Cons?

Be honest!

Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Anyone have a pool

  • I know that my dad's secretary had one and was tempted to fill it with concrete!  They say it turns off some people from buying your house.  Is it in-ground, fenced in, and well landscaped?

  • My parents have one and just moved to their house maybe 3 or 4 years ago. It has been very costly for them. They like having it but it is a LOT of upkeep. They had to get a new liner too, even though the one that was there when they bought the house only a year or two old, and I think it was upwards of like $6,000 to replace. Not to mention they had to drain all the water and then refill it, which makes the water bill outrageous, too.

They also hire a pool company to come out and keep the chemicals up to date and I know they like that because then they don't have to worry about it and mess with it themselves.

  • DH had one growing up, and when he was a teenager and young adult, he did basically all the maintenance on it.

It is an expense.  Yes.  It is also a problem if you think you want to sell your own house.

However.  IMO it will be worth it for us at some point in the future to either buy a house with a pool or put one in.

I like having my kids at home, and as they grow older, you either become the popular place to hang out or your kids find somewhere else.  Pllus I like a pool, too.

And the kicker for us is that under currently policy, when the govt moves us, they buy our house if we can't sell it, so we don't have to worry so much about that.  Without that reassurance, we might not be so inclined.

The pool in inground and well landscaped.  Very nice house.  Large privacy fence all around.

I would kinda like to maybe just fine a neighborhood with a pool after looking at the houses yesterday.

  • My parents have always had an inground pool, but they don't have one at their current house.  They're planning to add one to their current house in a few years.

They love having a pool, but they're fully aware of the constant maintenance to keep it clean and running properly and they're willing to take on those tasks.  Pools are also notorious for having random large expenses so you have to be ready to plan for those types of unexpected expenses.

I think pools are one of those things that the owners either love or hate.
