What do you do for sinus pain?

I typically do not suffer from sinus issues, other than seasonal allergies.  But this HAS to be sinus pain/headache and it is severe.  I was up all night rotating benadryl and tylenol with little to no relief and zero sleep.  I don't feel sick (like a cold) but I'm congested and going through a load of tissues.  The pain is awful in my forehead - feels like my eyes are going to pop out of my head at the moment.  I really cannot go through another night like last night.  Sudafed is on my 'safe list' but I'm reading conflicting information on the Phenylephrine, which is the active ingredient in regular Sudafed (OTC). I have a neti pot, but I'm kind of afraid to use it after seeing my daughter scream bloody murder from it!  I tried hot wash cloths, but again...no real relief.  I'm in so much pain. :(

  • Sudafed made with pseudophedrine.  They hold it behind the counter now, so you have to ask for it.

I've been sick for a couple weeks now, and the shower tablets also help me.  Hope you feel better.

  • Don't be afraid to use the Neti Pot.  It won't hurt.  I use the Sinus Relief squeezer thing (made from the same company, but I think is easier than the neti pot).  I am not SOLD on it as a magical cure, but I do enjoy using it when needed.

  • I use simply saline and a humidifier when I have sinus pain. Feel better
  • Take the sudafed - i was in so much pain yesterday that i broke down and took one. I was continuously tearing and i also was convinced my eyes were going to pop out of my head - one sudafed made ALL the difference. I was able to get over the hump enough to not have to take more - allowed the humidifier, saline spray, etc to actually be effective. I still feel crappy today but nothing like yesterday's pain.

  • I use the saline rinse from the company that sells the netipot. Breathe through your mouth and relax so it wont hurt. Make sure the water isnt too cold or too hot. I had that problem last week. It wasnt magic but it helped relieve some pain without using medicine. I also used vicks which helped

Don't hesitate to use the neti pot.  I'm not sure how old your daughter is, but the whole feel of the water traveling through your face can be a bit unnerving, especially for a child.  She might have just been uneasy/scared as to what was going on.  But the neti pot really only works if you use it regularly, so make sure if you're using it to supplement Sudafed or anything else, that you're using it on a regular basis.

GL and hope you feel better soon!

    Totally agree!

  • Man, the pain is just getting worse.  Tylenol isn't touching it.  I just used the Neti pot.  Not too bad and at least it didn't go through my ears like I did my daughter!  She's 11, but after one attempt, she'll never use it again.  I'll try it again later today.

I'm still a little confused on the Sudafed usage. Some sites say pseudoephedrine and others say phenylephrine, yet they both appear to have around the same risks.  On my safe meds list it just says "regular sudafed in red box".  I really don't want to use anything but at this point it's either that or call them for some pain meds!

  • The sudafed you can use is the stuff behind the counter, with pseudoephedrine. My doctor says its ok after the first tri as long as you don't have any blood pressure issues. I try not to use it unless I need to, and if you're in that much pain, it sounds like you need it!

Is it just pressure, or do you think you might have a sinus infection? I've only had pain that severe from an infection.

  • I have no idea it it's an infection or not.  I don't have any green stuff coming out, but I do have a load of gunk (and TMI - it's been quite bloody).  I just have loads of pressure and pain.  I didn't have a cold, though.  Or at least nothing bad.  I had a little sore throat a few days ago and have been congested, but I thought it was just the congestion of pregnancy.

I sent dh to the store to p/u the kind behind the counter.  Hoping I only have to take it once!

  • So weird when you have the exact same issue and thoughts at the same time!

I picked up a neti pot yesterda, but I have been scared to use it, too!! I have been trying to get up the nerve to try it all day.

Good luck with the Neti Pot!  It wasn't that bad.  It did feel like I was sniffing in pool water for a second.

I'm still in a crap load of pain once the sudafed wears off - I only took one pill twice.  I have an u/s with the OB tomorrow so I'll bring it up then.  I have never experienced head pain/pressure for this extended amount of time!
