Blocked Milk Duct Anyone?

I'm pumping and bottle feeding and today after waking from a nap, I found that my right breast was hurting.  I pumped immediately and got some relief but I still feel a bit of a hard spot on my right boob.  Does anyone have any experience with clogged milk ducts?  Do you think this is what the pain is? Can you tell me what this feels like and/or how to get rid of them?

Re: Blocked Milk Duct Anyone?

  • Take a hot shower! Massage it when you pump. Nurse your LO on that side to start with every time, and massage that lump or apply a warm/hot wet wash cloth. If you don't get it unclogged, it'll turn into mastitis- which makes the boob infinitely sorer, and you'll feel like you have the flu. If the lump is on the outside of your breast, put one hand under your breast when she nurses to put that duct into closer proximity to the nipple- it'll draw milk out of the closest ducts. :) Or try holding her in the football hold, that'll help draw out the milk too.

If you do get mastitis, keep nursing on that side to start with. It'll hurt like the dickens, but it's the only way to get that duct unclogged. And if you get mastitis, go the doctor asap!

  • What Tiffany said! Every time I feel a "lump", I massage in downward while feeding. Seems to take care of it.

  • That's what it sounds like to me. I got it twice today and LO just wasn't getting to the bottom of the breast to fix it for me so I finally pumped. On the affected breast I fed him and then still pumped out 3 oz. It felt sooo much better after that.
