our 6 day old LO has been EBFing, but we need to use a nipple shield for latching. in the hospital and home i have been opposed to using a bottle to avoid nipple confusion, but if i am using a nipple shield isn't that the same thing?
up til now, i have been using a syringe/eyedropper to feed him any extra milk i pump, which is a pain in the butt and takes forever.
any thoughts or advice? thanks!
Re: nipple confusion/nipple shield question
it isn't the same thing, because she still has too work at the breast for her meal
Although nipple shields should be used only after other options have been tried, it is better to have a baby on the breast with a shield than not on the breast at all!https://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/baby/wean-shield.html#weaning
Little Rose is 2 1/2.
My LO was in the NICU for 3 days on antibiotics so they were giving her formula to make sure she didn't dehydrate. I was BFing before each feeding but having a REALLY hard time. I ended up using the nipple shield and kept using it (though not exclusively) until a few days ago (so until she was about 3 weeks). She hasn't had any nipple confusion issues. I stopped using it because she really seemed to prefer eating WITHOUT the shield. Her latch still isn't always great, but we're working on it.
