For those with rescue inhalers

How old was DC when s/he got an actual inhaler instead of nebulizer treatments?  DS currently has albuterol through his nebulizer for a rescue treatment, but I'm really looking forward to moving on to an inhaler (ease of use, portability, etc.) instead.  I should have asked this at his check up, but I didn't think about it until reading the asthma post below.  TIA!

Re: For those with rescue inhalers

  • Dylan doesn't have traditional asthma so he doesn't NEED a rescue breath with his rescue inhaler.

He's doing well at actually blowing out and then inhaling deeply at age 4 but they make spacers that are designed for kids who can't correctly use them yet.  My understanding is that they make rescue inhalers work well at really young ages - before they're able to follow the directions and establish the deep breath required for dosing without the spacer.

I'd call your pedi and ask.  It might be worth trying to see how it goes!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

  • My guys needed nebulizer treatments quite a bit when they turned two.  The pedi then put them on a maintenance inhaler (I think it was Flovent).  She gave us a spacer and mask to use that helps little ones get the metered dose without having to inhale at exactly the right time.

  • We have a rescue inhaler with a spacer (same one as pp posted pic above)for DS. He has a reach inhaler that hnestly doesn't do anything, but we also have a maintenance inhaler of steroids that he takes daily.

His Doc has only ever given us these inhalers....what other options are there? We still have had to go to the ER 3x in the past few months for breathing treatment. (where his doctor office sends us after a visit there first)

Nebilizers are machines that plug in to the wall.  You pour a vial of albuterol in to a chamber and breathe the medicine in through a mask.  It takes 5-10 minutes to finish a vial.  It's what doctors offices and hospitals use for rescue.

Does your LO use the inhaler with the spacer?  I'm surprised your doctor hasn't given you the nebulizer.  It might save you trips to the ER.

  • What's funny is that we've done the reverse :)  We started out just before age 2 w/the inhaler/spacer (for FloVent as well as Albuterol when needed) & just now in the last few months got a neb.   She had some things happen this winter where we really needed to change things up.  Our specialist told me that when they are 4 or 5 there are more options as they learn how to do the breathing w/the inhaler. My SIL is an RN & she gave me a tube-thing to try instead of the spacer, but my DD just couldn't do it that way- she's almost 4.  Mostly she uses the spacer w/her inhaler & it works great.
  • Inhalers with spacers with masks can be used as young as 3-4 months as long as you have the correct size mask (orange for less than 1 year, yellow for 1-10 years).  THey are just as effective (from clinical trials) for all but the most severe symptoms (when it's hard to get a deep enough breath because of coughing, and a nebulizer might be better in that case)

    Just ask your pedi...

    good luck!

  • We were given a nebulizer and a rescue inhaler when Eva first got sick at 16 months.  We use the neb most of the time but I carry the rescue inhaler (with spacer) when we go places (ie- the zoo, dance class, shopping) as it is easier to carry and doesn't require us to find an outlet.  Thankfully she hasn't needed it much but she used to fuss when she got it but now takes it fine.
