Prenatal vitamin recommendations?

Hey everyone! My DH and I are getting ready to TTC and I wanted to start taking a PNV.  I have been doing some research online, but I just keep finding company sites with no "real" reviews.  Has anyone heard anything about Prenatalgyn?  I know I want something that has the most complete "package" so to speak.  One that has 800mg of folic acid, iron, calcium, choline, DHA, probiotics...etc.  Any advice would be most welcome!

Re: Prenatal vitamin recommendations?

  • With my doctor's blessing, I take prenatals from Costco. They're health balance. They're eight bucks for 240.

Just take something with 1000 mg of folic acid.

I also take 1000 IU of vitamin D, as I live in a place with winter and a lot of recent research says vitamin D is important in pregnancy and aside from pregnancy.

  • I took Prenate with DHA.  Here is a link....

I had to pay $50 for a 3 month supply (insurances will vary obv.).  They worked for me but I might look into cheaper options whenever I decide to get pregant again.

  • I use the prenatal vitamin by New Chapter. They are a bit pricey, but my iron has been amazing. I have had no constipation or any other symptoms. My Doctor is always super impressed by my numbers and she thinks it is because of my vitamins.
  • I took the Target brand prenatals with a separate supplement of DHA.

  • I take Prenatal One from Just Once - I buy it at Whole Foods - I think $30 for 150 tablets - I like it because it food-based, and has never made my stomach upset or anything, and I was also never constipated -

Just FYI, though - your prenatal should not have a ton of calcium in it, because it inhibits the absorption of iron. You should be able to get enough calcium in your food, but sometimes I drink OJ fortified with calcium later in the day

  • I take the New Chapter prenatal along with a cod liver oil for DHA.  The vitamin doesn't have calcium, but I eat a lot of dairy and greens.  I did a lot of research and liked that it is naturally sourced and with probiotics.  I have to take it with applesauce to get it down easily, but that's just because I hate swallowing vitamins.  I have never had a problem with feeling sick from it and I take it on an empty stomach all the time
  • I take the Rainbow Light Complete Prenatal System. It's 6 pills/day but it has super high % of everything and has probiotics and an herbal prenatal blend included. I like it because ite's food based and easy for one's body to absorb.

I take DHA separately (Spectrum Prenatal DHA (from algae not fish). And extra vitamin D (even though the prenatal has 800IU, more can't hurt) Doctors say up to 2,000IU is OK.

When I showed my Dr. my vitamins she said they were the best she's every seen and much better than any prescription she'd write. I appreciated her honesty!

New Chapter is also a very good brand.

  • Is there a difference in the way your body absorbs the plant based DHA as apposed to the fish oil kind?  Is one better, or does it matter?
