Is it really normal??!

Take note, DD1 was a HORRIBLE sleeper. Wouldn't sleep anywhere but on us for about 6 months. I had PPD, and never having a moment to myself was killing me.

Well, talk about opposite. This one sleeps all the time. She is awake for a little bit in the am, around 8ish, and then in the pm, again, around 8ish. She is of course awake every 2/3 hours to eat and be changed. I don't have to wake her. At night she sleeps 5/6 hour stretches....

She has passed her birthweight, and won't go back to the pedi til her 2 months visit (Dr wants us to avoid all the funk that is there!). So of course I vaguely worry about her not gaining enough, but that does not seem to be an issue! (11 oz gain in 2 days at one point)

Anyways, so THIS is normal newborn behavior? I know she goes a little longer at night than most, but otherwise...?

Re: Is it really normal??!

  • When DS was little, I remember the pedi telling me that it was normal for a newborn to sleep up to 22 hours a day.  The 2 hours awake time included feedings/diaper changes and alert time.  I remember being shocked - because like you, I had a horrid sleeper.  So I'd say yep, it's normal.

My niece was like that - we were far off from having kids and I remember thinking something must be wrong because she was constantly asleep.  She's still a good sleeper to this day - at 4.5 years old.

  • Beware, this may change! My LO was the exact same way. But in the past few days he has been waking every 3 hours on the dot at night after a good 2 weeks of 5 hour stretches:) he is still a great sleeper, just awake a little more between feedings now. I sure do miss that little bit of extra sleep and hope he starts giving me one long stretch soon:) Your girls are so precious!
  • Hehe... yep, that is normal for some. I have been blessed with three very easy going babies. I have four little brothers and I remember them screaming all the time! So when I had my first baby and he didn't cry very much and he was so easy, I was confused. I remember going to one of his check ups and asking the doctor if he was broken or something because he never cried and was so content with anything.

I hope it lasts for you. I am hoping I did not just jinx myself.

  • Take a deep breath and enjoy it!! ;) Sounds like you had a rough time with your first and were expecting the same this time around. But yes, totally normal...this is exactly what mine is doing too.

I was totally expecting the worst! Of course today, she hasn't wanted to sleep anywhere but on us :) I know there will be good days and bad, and don't expect this to keep up forever. But hey, I'll take what I can get!
