I Think I May Have Forgone Toys...

If I were to do this first time parenting thing again, I think I wouldn't really invest in toys. I mean, I'm sure I'd have some: gifts, etc, but really DS learns more and is far more interested in "real stuff." He will push a toy away in order to grab whatever I'm using. It's like he thinks, "lady, I don't see YOU playing with this plastic light up camera, why would I want it? Those keys, however....they seem pretty important to big people. Let me explore those!" I'm considering boxing up most of his toys and giving them away and letting him play with what he really wants: toothbrushes, straws, keys, spatulas... Haha.

Re: I Think I May Have Forgone Toys...

  • Toys really didn't get used much in our house until more imaginative play set in. Now my daughter plays for hours with her toys and it's so much fun to watch her. But I still find that "learning toys" are pretty much useless. My daughter has never learned a number or letter from pushing a button. At that age our favorites were a ball, some stacking blocks, and throwing Cheerios at the dogs.

  • JB, I think that's probably our case as well. I just don't have an old enough LO to have had the imagination stage yet. I can absolutely see the need or a box of dress up clothes or a mini kitchen set. I'm with you, the only person learning the alphabet song on his laugh & "learn" table is me! Haha

  • SAC - E doesn't play with many of the toys we have either. Funny though, the toy he REALLY loves is the drum with instruments that is in your siggy! We play with the instruments every.single.day. He loves to drum & make noise with them!  And that's just fine by me! We have a blast singing & making music together!

Other favorites are his books, shape sorter, a colorful lion looking thing that when you pull the string it vibrates (meant to hook on to an infant seat I think) & a colorful bead path that his big brother passed down to him. He loves them. But other than those, he doesn't love toys either.  He'd much rather play with a plastic spatula, practice clapping his hands, sing songs or just crawl around after me.

  • Give it another 6-12 months, and that plastic light-up camera will be a lot more interesting, as he's walking behind you everywhere going, "Cheese Mama, say cheese!  Mama CHEESE!!!" and pretending to take your picture all.day.long.  LOL

OMG Yes, he looooves his instruments! I'm impressed the drum holds up so well, he shows it no mercy! It's how I...Uh, I mean DS...gets Daddy up. :)
