Corn Syrup in Formula?

I read labels on everything I eat, but apparently never closely read the label on DD's formula.  My heart sank when I read "corn syrup solids" as the first ingredient.

WTF is up with that?

  • Some fornulas use corn syrup solids as the carbohydrates and/or a sweetener and it replaces lactose.

    Not all formulas will have corn syrup in it, though.

    I don't usually pay much attention to Dr. Sears stuff, but I found this to be a rather helpful breakdown of formula stuff.

  • I heard this was only in certain, special types of formula, like for reflux (??? think that was it.  What formula do you have?) and such.  It's a needed ingredient for that reason.  Regular formula doesn't have it.  There was a discussion on 6-9 about this recently.

  • It also adds calories to formula.  Normally when kids aren't gaining enough they have you add it to the formula.  In Asher's case since he can't have it, we add EVO to his bottles.  Sounds gross, but when you have to add fat...
