BRU Trade-In: WWYD

My mom has 3 used car seats in her possession (all 6+ year-old Britax seats).  Now that the BRU trade-in has come around, I was hoping to get something out of them.  I know Hank will eventually need a convertible car seat and high chair.  I've had my eye on the SK Radian based on the small footprint I'd need for my VW Rabbit and was also interested in a high chair that will grow with LO (Tripp Trapp, Svan, Keekaroo), but these brands I want are not part of the trade-in, nor are they available in our local store.  I could probably compromise on the high chair, but not the car seat.

So should I wait for the next trade-in and see if there are different participating brands?  How often does BRU have this trade-in event?  Twice a year?  Is it usually the same brands?  I was thinking of getting some stuff to keep at the grandparents' house, like high chairs (for when we visit) or some decent car seats for the grandparents' cars.  I don't anticipate Hank having to ride with either my ILs or my mom very often since I am staying home for 1 year and Hank will be going to daycare or a sitter after that.  I really wanted to take full advantage of the 25% off deal and get the biggest bang for my buck.

Anyway...sorry for rambling.  WWYD?

Re: BRU Trade-In: WWYD

  • Hmmmm I don't know what I'd do, but honestly, I've seen the trade-in at least 2 times before, so I *do* know that this is not the only one.

Another thing to keep in mind is that BRU prices are fairly inflated, so even with the discount, it may still be cheaper at another store with another discount or even without a discount...

  • Hey Nicole, have you checked out Amazon's prices? We got our convertible car seat on Amazon because the newest model was the same price as the older soon-to-be-discontinued model that was on sale locally. Shipping was free and no tax so we saved a ton. As for the brands, it always seems like the same brands are excluded from the BRU sales. I was hoping to get a Maclaren umbrella stroller the last time they had their big sale but was bummed to see that it was one of the excluded brands. I think most of 'higher end' brands are always on that list. =(

  • yeah they have these events all the time. I've never paid attn to the excluded brands, though, so i'm not sure if they change. i'm sure if you called BRU they'd be happy to tell you.  i just checked my email and the last trade in events were late Jan and late Aug so it seems they do this at least 2 if not 3 times a year

I was going to say get something like a cheap car seat for the grandparents' cars or a pack n play but then I look at the prices and their prices are so inflated....the cosco scenera after discount is $45 and i've seen it $35-45 fairly often at stores like target, big lots, etc.  and the graco pack n play basic model is $52ish after discount and that's how much it was at walmart when we got ours. so, if you can find something and know what the good prices are, go for it, but i wouldn't get something just b/c it's 25% off during this trade in event

re: car seats for the grandparents' car....if he isn't going to use them much i'd get the cosco scenera or wait for a deal on another... we got the cosco scenera for the IL's car and lucked out and got the roundabout for my parents' car when it was clearanced at target for $50. both are fine given the fact that she is only in them a few times a year. if i were you i'd just keep an eye out for deals if you don't have an immediate need.

  • I don't think you have to per say..trade in for the exact same thing...I beleive they just give you a coupon for 25% off...so you could use it later?
  • Thanks for the insight, everyone.  I went to BRU yesterday and it was a zoo.  We left because they were so overwhelmed with people.  I got to see the Britax Boulevard in person and it is HUGE!  I'm pretty sure I want the SK Radian XTSL and plan to stop by a local shop that sells it to see how it fits in my car.   I know for a fact the footprint is smaller, but am unsure of the recline in RF position.  If I like it, I'll probably get it on Amazon.  H doesn't need it right now, but I found a pretty good price (I think?) with free shipping to Hawaii.

I'm thinking of just trading in one of my mom's car seats for a high chair.  Maybe the Carter's one that inamra and lelekay have.  Unfortunately, the 25% off is only good for the day of the trade-in.

I did a lot of research before we got ours...and we ended up getting it for $107 total (free shipping/no taxes) on Diapers.com with a 15% off coupon for first-time buyers (if you need one, I have more). But it was because the original price was $125 and I found it again and it's now $139.99 so pre-tax + coupon = $119. Boo =( So I think BRU with the 25% is actually the best deal at this moment if the price in Hawaii is $149.99 (like it is in my area) which will come out to $112.49 pre-tax.

BuyBuyBaby is actually a slightly better deal with their 20% off coupons (pre-tax price w/coupon: $111.99)--I was gonna get ours there (I had only a 20% BRU coupon at the time and nothing to trade in) until I found 15% off Diapers.com coupons--but I just checked and there's no BBB in Hawaii =(

  • I second Amazon for good deals. Especially if you have some time to wait for a bargain, I think it's worth ordering from them. The customer service is amazing and the shipping truly is free to Hawaii. Lots of other online retailers won't ship here (like Diapers.com) or will add on big surcharges (like BRU), and the local store prices are often higher than the mainland counterparts (like Target). So even with a coupon, you might just break even after tax. At least on Amazon, you can get a significant discount, no tax, free shipping AND pay what the people on the mainland pay. :-)

EXACTLY!  I think you were the one who first told me about the Free Super Saver Shipping when I was looking into Charlie's soap.  I hadn't shopped on Amazon before that.  I can't believe some of the shipping prices to Hawaii (IF they even ship to Hawaii)! I hope Amazon keeps it up!
