Babies: 6 - 9 Months

(Long) I am ashamed to admit....

I am ashamed to admit that my DS takes all of his naps (3ish per day) in the vibrating bouncer. When he was first born he preferred it to everything, even sleeping on us. It was easy for us too! Fast-forward 7 months and it is STILL the only thing he naps in.

He goes to daycare full time and they used to put him in the crib but he was only taking 10-30 minute naps and cried everytime. I told them to just switch to the bouncer like we do at home and he naps for 1-2 hrs, sometimes more.

It's not the vibration that he needs because half the time the batteries are dead at daycare. It's the bouncing. We bounce him to sleep and if he starts to stir and wake up early we bounce him a little and he goes right back out.

He STTN 12ish hours in his crib, so it's not that he hates the crib. I tried rocking him and putting him in the crib for a couple naps but he SCREAMS! Not cries, Im talking blood curdling scream. Sometimes right away, sometimes after rolling around and playing for a little bit.

I've thought about possibly ferbering for naps, but he's had so many ear issues (going for a tube eval tomorrow =[ ) I have always talked myself out of it So now that his ear issues are going to (hopefully!) be resolved, there will be no excuse.

Now I need your opinions, what is the best way to go about napping in the crib? Should I darken the windows and do our bedtime routine or will that confuse him?

  • I don't have any advice for you because my LO sleeps in our bed for naps, I just wanted to know what part of Buffalo you are from? I live there too!

  • Do you think the elevation is easier on his ear maybe?  When my girls are sick, I put a regular bed pillow under one end of their mattresses to elevate them.  They sleep so much easier and seem to handle the extra fluid in their heads this way.  We also had to do this for reflux when they were newborns too.

She has never been an "I love my crib" baby, but I do plan on trying to sleep train as soon as we get into the new house. I'm in the Hamburg/Lakeview area. I'm so excited to see another bumpie from Buffalo!
  • My opinion is that however they can sleep, let them do it.  I don't care how.  DS#2 slept in the swing (and it had to be swinging the WHOLE time) for a very, very long time.  For nighttime, naps, everything.  So I don't really have any advice, because personally I'd just let the situation be.

  • Not a big deal. He will eventually grow out of it and sleep in his crib !
  • My DS napped on me from birth until six months.  He just started sleeping in his crib at night on NYE instead of in our room.  It was a hard transition but I was determined that his crib would get some use!  We have dark curtains on his windows, a sound machine and he also likes the fan on.  The one thing we can't stop is rocking him to sleep.  He can't soothe himself to sleep :(  Some naps are 30 minutes and others are two hours.  Every day is different.  We do a diaper change, close the curtains, turn on the sound machine and rock.  Not a big routine but it's the same every nap.  Unless it's becoming a problem for you, just do what you have to do to let him get some sleep.  Good Luck!
  • try elevating the crib mattress because maybe his ears hurt when he's laying flat.  He maybe so tired at night that he can ignore it but not during the day (both my girls are bad nappers).  That said DD#2 still naps in the bouncer so I'm not throwing any stones lol.
  • I am ashamed to admit DD didn't even have a swing until 2 days ago. She has been refusing to nap and I can't CIO (my hormones go haywire) but I was so desperate I bought a swing for the purpose of using it for naps. I am in the camp right now of whatever will make them sleep. DD is taking a nap and has been down for almost 2 hours and it's like my own piece of heaven.
  • We had the same problem but with a magic swing...it was SO much easier to put him in there, he loved it, we loved it...but all I can say is do not put it off much longer....the longer you wait the harder it is...we did start by using the Ferber method of cio w/going in to comfort with increasing intervals but it didn't work to well for us I would put him down sleepy & instead of falling asleep he would get so worked up he couldn't settle back down no matter how many times we would go in...then we switched to just putting him in his crib after he had fallen asleep in the swing or by rocking him...then about 2/3 weeks after that put him in there at night too...he did NOT like it at first but eventually got used to it, he still wakes up at least once a night, the faster we get in there & pop his bink in the faster he goes back to sleep & thats, that! His naps are sorta random goes to sleep around the same times every day but the lengths are random...I have chalked it up to he has the same sleep issues as both of us & just doesn't need as much sleep as other lo's....

  • DS didn't like the crib at all until we sleep trained him at 7.5 months. Once we started the nighttime training, we also did naps. I usually pull down the shades, nurse him to drowsiness, lay him in his crib, give him his lovey, turn on white noise machine and walk out. He didn't like it at all at first and would cry on and off for an hour. I just checked on him but sometimes that would get him more worked up so I stopped. The naps were really short at first (less than 30 minutes). Now he goes down with no fussing/crying and will sleep for at least an hour.

  • Uhhh yeah I have no clue.  DD sleeps like a champ in her crib at night, but wakes as soon as we lay her in there for naps.  And I mean wide awake, not stirring.  Therefore she only naps in arms throughout the day.

No advice, but I just wanted to let you girls know there is an Upstate NY board.  I don't remember seeing either of you over there, but there are some Buffalo girls!
