All we have are the mercury kind or an oral digital one. I want to get an ear one - do you have one and would you recommend it? I've seen such a price difference between the different models.

No, we have the little round thermal one for her ear. I don't like it and wouldn't recommend it unless you have a very compliant child. I would recommend one that you just aim at their forehead and it takes their temp.
*ETA I have also heard good things about the paci ones, but I don't know how well that would work for us. I would prefer one that requires NO COOPERATION from a grumpy, sick baby!

Do not get the ear one...we have the safety first one - I think it was $25 and it's really quick and I didn't find it hard to use but I've heard they're very inaccurate and when B had her ear infection and had a fever, it always came back low.
I wish I had just spent the money on the forehead one....the Exergen one that Dkay has.

I also have the Safety 1st one, mine is pretty accurate.....or at least, I always thought it was.

we use a digital rectal 99% of the time. We have the Braun ear thermometer recommended by our pharmacist - but i never feel like i'm getting a good reading- we only use it now if they are sleeping and feel warm and we want to check without waking up.
rectal is best - most accurate... it doesn't hurt.
Griffin has been using a regular digital oral thermometer for about a year not (since 3) and does fine with it... i would not use mercury - takes too long, danger if broken - no reason to use one when digitals work so well.
Goldie-I agree rectal is best, but lately she is like an octopus when I change her diaper. I can only imagine trying to take her temp! It would have to be a two person job.

We have a temporal lobe thermometer that we always relied upon until DD finally got her first serious fever this year (yes, she went over 2 years without a real fever!). She was obviously hot and feeling badly, but the temporal one kept reading normal. I finally used a quick read underarm thermometer and it came up with a temp of 102.4 degrees! So now that is my go-to thermometer. FWIW, my pedi's office uses the temporal lobe one. So does the clinic where my SIL works as a pediatric nurse practitioner, and she told me that sometimes they are unreliable and if they get a kid in the office who is clearly running a fever and the temporal lobe doesn't show it, they always double check it with an underarm digital (or oral for older kids).

We have this temporal one too! Our pedi office uses it as well. I really like it, very accurate! I got a great deal on it at BJ's wholesale...BJ's coupon and a manufacturer rebate made it less than $20!

I finally bought this one https://www.amazon.com/Exergen-Temporal-Artery-Thermometer-TAT-2000C/dp/B000LJAEPQ. and love it. I am able to scan T's forehead while she asleep. We have an ear one but I don't like it. I don't know if it true but I had heard the ear one isn't as accurate if they have a ear infection.
this i have heard the ear one is also not accurate if lo has wax in there and it also is not accurate if you dont have it positioned correctly
