February 2011 Moms

Just woke up to a rather large amt of blood...

That soaked through my underwear through to my sweatpants. I'm 14 days post partum. I'm a little freaked. My bleeding tapered off days ago. Idk if I should call the Dr. or go to the ER. I know as part of my discharge instructions they said if you have a clot larger than a large strawberry you should be concerned. What to do....

  • That does sound like alot of blood. Especially since it has been two weeks. I would say to give the dr a call and just to let them know. Even if they say it's completely normal, it's better to be safe and not dismiss it.

  • I say call the dr too, just for peace of mind. I imagine if you didn't have a very large clot they won't be too concerned, but always better safe than sorry. GL!

  • I would call. But I had a huge increase in bleeding around 14 days that lasted about three days and has now tapered off again. I remember this happening with my boys as well so I think it is normal.

  • I would call as well just to be sure

  • I've done that before. Especially when I have overdone it the day before, then go to sleep, the blood pools when you are lying down. Still call for peace of mind but I'd see if you soak thru another pad or pass any clots. I'm 2.5 weeks pp and my bleeding keeps coming and going. Yesterday it was pretty heavy and I had no bleeding the day before. GL!
  • My OB said pp bleeding comes and goes in waves. It can taper off and then start back up again, especially if you changed your activity level.

I bled for 10 weeks with DS. :(

But as others said, if you continue to bleed through another pad or pass clots, I'd call/go in just to be safe.

  • This happened to me last week. My bleeding had tapered off then came back in full force. I called the Dr and they said I could be because I was being more active.

  • I would call just to be safe. About 10 days pp I passed a clot the size of a egg and then a smaller one about the size of a quarter. It freaked me out more than anything but I was ok. My bleeding didn't pick up much after that but I was more active that day.

Now it just just about gone... little bit of pinkish discharge.

  • Thanks for all the advice girls. I'm happy to hear you guys think its normal. I called the Dr after I posted this morning and she basically said same things. Said if I'm really concerned to go to the ER which is what I figured she'd say. My step mom is a nurse and she was just here. I showed her my pad ((we're not very modest she's seen me at my worst lol)). She said she didn't think it was worth going to ER for. Said to take it easy until Monday. If something changes btwn now and then call the dr.

Thanks for all the response. I just get nervous. I cough wrong and I think I have the Sars lol

  • Just an FYI, I had just asked my OB the same question- I was having brown bleeding and now back to red with heavy clots but smaller than their 'golf ball' sized call in request.  They also said it could be due to increased activity (I hadn't left the house prior to yesterday when we had two doctors appointments).  However, we saw our doula today who said that some time between one and two weeks something about the lining or the spot where the placenta was or something makes  you bleed more and see more clots, and that is perfectly normal to happen.  I'll have to look that up, I just caught that in passing and didn't spend too much time talking about it with her.

This confuses me.. another person said their dr said oreo, which is around the same size as a strawberry, but my dr said a grape. WHAT SIZE IS IT?! A grape is pretty small, and i've had clots that had me really wondering if its grape sized.
