Group B strep and c-section?

Does it matter if you are GBS+ if you have a c-section?  I thought it was transmitted during a vaginal delivery, but never really looked into it since I didn't have a c-section last time.

Baby A is footling breech, so we're scheduling a c-section tomorrow (I don't know for when.) They mentioned doing the swab and it got me thinking....

Re: Group B strep and c-section?

  • never mind.  Dr. Google answered my question:

According to CDC guidelines, a C-section should not be used to prevent early-onset GBS infection in infants. Also, if the C-section is planned and the mother is identified as having GBS, antibiotics need not be given unless labor has begun or the water breaks prior to the surgery.

No matter what birthing option a GBS-infected mother chooses, it?s essential that she be aware of her condition. ?If [the mother knows] she is GBS colonized and her water breaks, it is important she gets to the hospital immediately to protect the baby from infection,? says Anderson. It is recommended that antibiotics be administered at least four hours prior to birth to be most effective against infection, she adds.

  • I don't think it matters. They give you a dose of antibiotic before the CS regardless. (at least thats common practice in my hosp)
  • if you're having a c-section then Group B Strep is no longer an issue. Group B is in your vagina and if the baby won't be delivered vaginally, then there's no way for baby to come into contact with it. your baby will be plucked right out of your uterus, so no worries. There are no worries anyway if you were to deliver vaginally, because they wipe out the strep with an antibiotic while you're in labor (i'm group b positive and they will be giving me this).

  • I had a scheduled c section as well because DD was breech, but they said I needed the test anyway in case she flipped or my water broke.
