Back Carrying

I have a moby and love it.  This is my first post here and I don't even lurk that much but I realize most people recommend some different brands, which I'm totally open to trying.  But when did you start carrying on the back?  I'm sure my DS is too young now (just turned 3 months).  I'd really only want to use it for cooking because he about never lets me put him down and when he is down he wants to be able to see me.  Right now I'm existing off of no cook food and microwavable things and I'll be so happy when I can just do some easy cooking again without someone else home to watch LO (my DH works long hours in the evenings).  Any suggestions on videos to watch of this hold?  TIA!

Re: Back Carrying

  • I have a hotsling, so I can't speak for the Moby. But I started the back carry when she was about 6 months old.

  • Unfortunately you can't back carry in a stretchy wrap because it will stretch away from you and they can fall out. There are youtube videos if you want to see what I mean.

We got an Ergo when our boy got bigger and you can back or front carry in that. It's super comfortable and will last until he's huge, although I wouldn't recommend a back carry in it with such a little one just yet, maybe 6 months.

As for your cooking dilemma, do you have a high chair in the kitchen? When my boy is particularly clingy I can sometimes put him in the high chair with a few super fun toys (or snacks now that he's big) and get some cooking done. He can still see me but I'm able to cook safely.

  • Ditto PP and the highchair suggestion.  While I totally understand the dilemma of trying to feed yourself when you have a clingy baby, it really isn't safe to cook while wearing a baby, even on your back.  It's just too close of proximity to fire.

I LOVE my crockpot; you just have to throw ingredients in in the morning and by dinnertime you have a hot, delicious meal waiting for you.  And it's ready whenever you're ready to eat, so if dinner gets pushed back 30 mins because of a fussy baby, it's no big deal.

    Good luck!

i don't think you can put a 3 month old in a high chair if they can't sit up?  Maybe a bouncer or a bumbo if you like those.

You can do high back carries with woven wraps or with mei tais with wee ones as long as they have neck support.  There are lots of YouTube videos to help.  SSC's or other regular back carries aren't recommended until about 5-6 months.

Our high chair reclines for the younger babies, we started C in there around 3-4 months :)

  • Thanks girls!  I hadn't thought about our high chair!  It's one of those reclinable space savers that can sit on chairs.  Now I just need to convince DH to get it out of the box.  I've tried the crock pot thing and it still doesn't work because half the time DH doesn't get home until 4 am and then has to go back at 2 pm so when I'd need to get the meal put together DH is needing to sleep.  And then of course I can never get to the dishes either.

  • We started back carries in the BabyHawk @ 4 months.  :)  Easier, in my opinion, than a woven wrap. especially when you're out and about.  We still use the same carry now at a year.
