Is this illegal?

Does anyone know if it's illegal in Ohio to have your infant's car seat in the front passenger seat? I'm not talking about trucks, but cars and minivans.

I tried Google but all I'm coming up with are the laws regarding child safety seats, not necessarily where to put them.

I really hope it's illegal, otherwise I just made a huge a$$ out of myself in the bank drive-thru.

Re: Is this illegal?

  • I am 90% sure it's illegal.

    It's definitely moronic.

  • Not sure, it might depend if there are airbags and if so, if they are turned off.
  • "Car Seat Laws

    * Rear facing seats should never be used in the front seat if the vehicle contains an active passenger-side airbag. Although not mandated, the safest place for your child of any age is in the back seat of the vehicle."

ETA:  www.nhtsa.gov and Institute for Highway Safety both say that "law states no preference for rear seat".

  • From what I know SistrKate is right. Law states that seats are to be used in accordance with the seat manufacturer's instructions so if the instructions don't specifically forbid use in the front seat it is legal (albeit stupid) to have them in the front.

  • It's legal. My carseat manual even listed it ad a better alternative than baby being alone in the backseat IF you can turn off the airbag (Graco). I didn't do it, though it would have meant a lot less screaming.
  • Unless laws have changed When my son was a baby (5 years ago) is was not a law. My husband drives a work van and was responsible for picking DS up 2 days a week from daycare, and bring him home (only 2 miles).  Van only had 2 seats. Buying another vehicle was not an option at the time so we had the airbags turned off.  Alot of vehicles automatically turn airbags off now if passenger doesn't weight the recomended amount.
