Flu while pregnant

I'm pretty sure I have the flu.  My husband has had flu-like symptoms since Wednesday, and I have had several kids in my class out who have been diagnosed with the flu.  I got a shot, but apparently it isn't doing a whole lot of good this year.  I felt a little bad this morning, and then by tonight, I felt like I'd been hit by a truck.  Uuuuugh.  Right now my temp is at 100.4.

So my question is, should I call the doctor?  I know the doctor can't do anything for you if you have the flu, but is it more important to call because I'm pregnant?  I am ridiculous about calling the doctor and put it off at all costs, but I'm thinking maybe this situation is different.

Thanks for reading!  Please pray that my kiddo doesn't come down with anything.  :(

Re: Flu while pregnant

  • Gosh, I really don't know.  I don't think it would be a bad idea just to give the doc a call and see what they say.......I think better safe than sorry when you're pregnant.

I really hope you feel better.  As if pregnancy discomfort isn't enough!

  • I am so sorry you're feeling icky. I had the flu when I was about 38 weeks pregnant and it was awful. I remember being so scared the baby would come and I would have no energy to push her out. I would call the doctor just to see if there is anything they would want to do. My doctor gave me tamiflu because they were worried I may have H1N1. I think the medicine made it worse initially but I did start feeling better.

  • I had the flu last month while I was still pregnant.  There is no need to call during non-office hours, but I would call tomorrow morning and make an appt. to be tested for the flu.  They can read the test right away and prescribe Tamiflu if you do have it (which doesn't cure the flu but shortens the duration of your symptoms).  I might have skipped going in, but my breathing was not so good, and I needed treatment for that as well.  Other than that, the only thing you can do is rest and take Tylenol for pain/fever.  I had no appetite and felt bad for not eating since I was 9 mos. pregnant but as long as you stay hydrated, you're okay.  Wash hands and try to get help with your DS so he doesn't come down with anything.  I pretty much quarantined myself from my family and no one else came down with it.  I know I was miserable and I really feel for you being pregnant and having this nastiness!  Hope you feel better soon!

  • Oh, sorry you're feeling crummy. Yes, you should give your OB a call. Being pregnant diminishes your immune system and thus it is more likely for pregnant women to suffer complications from the flu (such as pneumonia) than a nonpregnant woman. This is most true for women in their 3rd trimester. Give them a call and I hope you're feeling 100% soon.

  • Yes, call your OB.  I had the flu when I was pregnant and they sent me straight to the hospital for constant monitoring of the baby.  I spent 3 days in the hospital.  Of course, that was during the H1N1 craze but I think they are still pretty vigilant about monitoring pregnant women with the flu!

  • I had a short 24 hour stomach bug at about 28 weeks.  I did end up calling b/c I could keep nothing down.  My ob had me go in immediately for fluids.  My ketone levels were out of control.  I would definitely call.
