Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Disposable placemats?

Do these really work?  DH and I are going out to eat tonight with 3 other couples and taking DD.  We haven't taken her out to eat very much and not at all since she has been feeding herself.  Should I pick some of these up and try them tonight?  Or will it be a waste of money?  I just don't know what to do about the eating off the table situation (just wipe it and go with it?).

Sorry if this seems silly to some of you ladies and I'm not a freak about germs or anything, just not sure what they use to wipe down tables in between customers!  :)

Re: Disposable placemats?

  • I use them for the fact that I do not know what restaurants use to wipe down tables. For my own piece of mind I use the disposable place mats. IMO I think they are worth the money, the stick to the table and he hasn't figured out how to rip it off. And the pictures on them keep him occupied for a few minutes anyway.

  • I'm kind of a germ freak. I've used the plastic disposable placemats and they used to work pretty well. We don't go out to eat as often as we used to - now when we use them, she just rips them off, especially if they're on a tablecloth of some sort. So I usually try it first, then if it's more of a hassle than it's worth, I rip it off, wipe down the table with an anti-bacterial wipe and just go with it.Honestly, it's easier to just use the table.

  • We love them, and my guy hasn't ripped them off either, but usually we don't go to places that have a cloth on the table.  If it has a cloth on the table, its prob easier to just try to keep the food on a plate.

  • We use them! They have lots of cute pictures that keep DD entertained, plus keep all the germs away! I think the Disney & Baby Einstein ones are $9.99 for 20, but BRU has their own brand for cheaper.

  • First time we used them DS ripped it right off. So food went all over him. DS is super curious and DH calls him babyzilla so prob not every kids reaction, give it a try I liked the idea of them. GL

  • I loved them when they were younger but yes, mine tend to tear them off now & I haven't used them in a couple months. Instead, if I'm not sure of the situation, I stick a couple of the smaller sized paper plates in my diaper bag to put their food on.  I genearlly wipe the table & will put dry things right on there, like cheerios or goldfish or puffs...(cuz they'll play w/ the paper plates too unless there is 'real' food on it). Giving them those types of snacks in very small portions to keep them occupied before the real food comes is pretty much our MO in decreasing crying, wiggling, etc...

  • We use them all the time when we are out! I love them! I keep a pack in the diaper bag all the time, so whenever we go out to eat we have them. We have the baby Einstein ones so there are fun pictures, numbers, and letters on them for him to look at and for us to talk about to him while we wait for the food. Sometimes, though we just put his snacks and food on it. I definitely recommend them, I don't like the idea of just eating off the table and DS would probably throw a plate on the floor...LOL.
  • We have used them. DD does not try to rip it off as long as we get the edges down well. I like them because then I don't have to trust that someone wiped off the table well. Plus I used to work in a restaurant and so I like the idea of not leaving a big mess behind to be nice to the staff that has to clean up after us. When we took DD to Perkins on her B-day (She LOVES breakfast food!) the waitress like it so much she asked if there was somewhere they could buy them in bulk!
  • Once B learned to rip up the suction cup mat we had, we just started wiping the table. I know SIL used the disposable ones for a while, but from what I saw they never worked very well. Not sure if it was the brand, the tables, or just her ability to stick them properly, but it seemed like a giant waste of money since they never actually did their job.

I would definitely at least wipe down the table yourself. Even if waitstaff did it between customers, those rags aren't changed out between tables. :x

  • We use these all the time and love them:)  They are great.  When we take off the bottom sticky thing, we fold it down around the table even.  We use the Disney Cars ones with DS and you can even color on them (not that it works great).  I would defiantly try them out.

  • I bring a small pack of clorox wipes with us everywhere. I wipe down the high chair/table surface and then put Liam's food on the table. The placemats are a good idea too though! :) We LOVE our Pampers disposable bibs! Super handy for dining out!

  • We use these re-usable placemat we got at BRU and you wouldn't believe the waitstaff that have thanked us for using it! It has a food catcher that really helps there be less mess on the floor. We even use it under plates now.

  • I haven't used them, and I don't think I want to.  I have some bowls that suction onto a surface, and will sometimes bring one of those with us.
