When Does The Man Start Coming To Appointments??

So this is my first time at all of this and I haven't had my first ob visit because I'm not far along at all. Just curious when you're husbands or significant other's started coming along to appointments. Right away at the first one?

  • He can come whenever he wants, but mine will probably just come to ones where an U/S will be done.

  • Since DH has a job that he just can't up and leave when I was pregnant with DD he only came to 1 appt, in the very beginning, to hear the heartbeat. And he came to 1 ultrasound where we found out the sex.  This time around it will probably be the same.  Most appointments you are just going to be peeing into a cup and hearing the heartbeat, they are so repetitive and boring.

  • I think it all depends. My husband and I talked about this and decided that he would come to all the ultrasounds. My doctor's office is in a different state than where we live (it's 5min from my work) so on the other appointments/bloodwork and things like that I would just go by myself. My doctor's office schedules all u/s for the evening so it is easier. I call my husband immediately after my appointments to fill him in but I'd rather he save his time off for when the baby comes! I'm sure every one is different though.

  • Well thank you so much for the input! I'm pretty much at a lose for what I'm suppose to do. After I got the positive HPT I had to call my mother and asked her what I do next. Ha. Thanks again everyone.

  • My FI is insisting on going to every single appointment with me, even the not so important ones. He says he doesn't want to miss a single moment and that he wants to be with me should anything unexpected happen.

  • My husband will mostly only coming to the ultrasound appointments (unless something comes up that he needs to be there for).

  • My husband wants to come to every appointment too. Fortunately, he has tons of sick leave so its not an issue for him to take off a couple hours for an appointment.  Although I think it's a bit unnecessary, I like being able to share the whole experience with him.

  • we picked a midwife/hospital that my husband can see from his office, so he'll be able to come to every appointment!

with my DD and DS, he came to most of them, but due to work conflicts wasn't able to attend every appointment.

  • DH is going to come to the first appt with the nurse to talk about what to expect the next few months, test to see if we're carriers, etc.  Then he'll come to the first u/s to hear the heartbeat and the u/s to find out the sex but that should really be it until the very end!

  • My H is coming to all of the appointments. His job is such that he can be flexible on things. He finds this pregnancy to be fascinating and is always asking questions and wanting to hear about it.

  • WIth our DD, my husband came to every appointment.  He wants to do the same with this little one.  He was very interested in everything that was going on, plus I think it made him feel more connnected to the pregnancy and the baby.

    This.

For most appointments, you pee in a cup, they measure your belly and find the heartbeat quick before sending you on your way.  Your DH can go to those appointments, but mine usually doesn't.

  • My first appointment was at week 10 and it was very useful to have him there because they ran through all sorts of genetic questions and I have no idea what runs in his family.

Since then, he's only come to the ultrasound appointments -- two so far -- and the one for the quad screening results. He's very willing to come to the others, and has even expressed disappointment at missing them, especially the first doppler one, but it's just too difficult to arrange around both of our work schedules.

Just because someone's SO doesn't see the need to waste 4 hours of sick time on a 5 minute appointment where nothing happens doesn't mean they don't want to be a part of things or have no idea what is going on. Hell, I didn't want to go to most of them. It gets old after a while if you have an uncomplicated pregnancy- check pee, weight, BP, fundal height, doppler, any questions? No, see you in 4/2/1 weeks.

Mine came to the initial visit with the OB because they were going over a lot of info with the nurse consult that happened first, u/s's, and he came with to the last appointment since we would setting up an induciton date. There was no reason for him to be there otherwise.

I don't think she meant it as an attack on other people whose husbands have jobs that conflict. My husband is going to come to all my appointments too, just because he wants to be informed in case there are any changes, and can ask questions because this is our first pregnancy.

  • My DH has come to all of my appointments, but I've had a ton of U/S's as well. I think once my appts start being just checkups, weight checks etc then we won't come, but we'll see! I love having him there.

  • MH has been to every appointment and won't miss a single one. I think it's so sad to see these pregnant girls coming out of the office alone. Why wouldn't the husband want to go? He has just as many questions as I do.
