Are all TREE nuts the same? [edited for rssn]

Will just got a hold of a cashew and ate it. He's been fine with peanuts/peanut butter, so I really didn't think about it until after he'd eaten it. Should I be watching him for signs of an allergic reaction, or are all tree nuts generally the same when allergies are concerned?

  • Oh...TREE nuts.

:::erases the answer that immediately popped into mind when asked, "Are all nuts the same?":::

    Dear Bump: You suck.

  • Peanuts and tree nuts are separate allergies, and some folks are even allergic to specific tree nuts only.

It doesn't hurt to watch for a reaction (with any new food), but if he has no other allergies and is fine with peanuts, odds are he'll be just fine.

Thanks Becko! I didn't realize they were so different. I'll watch him closely for a few hours, but hopefully he's just fine. He's currently screaming on the floor because I wouldn't give him anymore Stick out tongue

  • We're staying away from nuts til the boys are probably at least 2.5 or 3 just because they're a choking hazard, but I'd imagine they're not at all like peanuts or almonds, and thus would present a whole new allergy.
  • Nope they are different. I can eat peanut butter (albeit getting a sore throat) but if I eat pistachios I have to have an epi pen immediately but fine eating cashews (minor sore throat). It's like MrsBeckO said and it can take up to 3 times before a reaction is seen.
  • Thanks everyone! No reaction thus far, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say he's fine :) We don't plan on giving him any more nuts in the near future b/c of the choking hazard factor, but it's nice to know that if he does accidentally get  one, he's probably fine!
