I had a similar experience with "Our 365". I knew that newborn photos were pretty standard and I had the option to accept or decline but I had no idea I was signing myself up for a sales pitch. I thought some friendly maternity nurse would take a snapshot and I'd sign a release to have it published on the hospital's virtual nursery. Nope. This was a sales rep and she was pushy! I sen her away the first time and she called and stopped by two more times. Finally, she just about ran over the lady with the social security paperwork to get us before we left. Then, she ran me through a whole catalog of packages in the hundreds of dollars. Right. For a photo of my jaundiced baby taken on the foot of my hospital bed? No thanks. I opted for the free one. Yeah. It was printed out on a sheet of 8.5"x11" paper! My mom said she got 12 wallets of each of us for free when we were born. To add insult to injury, I got home and found they'd sold my email address to everybody and their brother! (I know it was them because of the typo in my last name!) OK /vent. Sorry. I just agree that the maternity ward is no place for a sales pitch.

Haha, that sounds terrible! I just can't even wrap my head around how it's become appropriate to inundate us with sales pitches everywhere we turn! I especially dislike the Disney culture, just not my cup o' tee

I had the same experience with Our 365...the woman didn't even introduce herself...just came in and said she was there to take some pics of our baby. I assumed she was with the hospital, and also thought it was for their nursery site. It took me a few minutes to figure out she was with a company trying to sell me overpriced pictures, and then there was no way I was going to buy them, whether they were awesome of not. I felt so taken advantage of! I bet a lot of moms fall for the sales pitch...they get you when you are hormonal and completely exhausted. This actually reminds me that I meant to complain to our hospital about that experience...oops, only 9 months late...=)
Wow, if a disney rep comes in my room when LO is born I will NOT be happy. Between nursing and sleeping and nurses, I am not willing to spare any time for that. I am not against going to disney, but there is a time a place, and L&D is not it!
As the for the picture companies, we had Bella Baby and they almost forgot about us. The lady walked into our room just hours before we were to leave and said she had like 10 mins real quick to do the pics b/c she had to rush to another room before that mom left. I had known about the company before hand and knew they took pics of baby with mom and dad if you wanted. I was excited for that, to have nice professional pics of us as a family for the first time. Well she didnt have time for that. She also wouldn't wait for me to nurse A so he would be more awake for the pics. I wish I had more energy at the time to demand she come back or something haha.
What hospital is allowing ANYONE in labor and delivery who isn't an ok'd visitor by the patient? Our families had to be buzzzed onto the floor. Not only is being sold to at the hospital annoying, but it is predatory for the mother and dangerous for the babies. These hospitals need to hear the message loud and clear from the paying patients that this is NOT ok.
On one of your consent forms you sign ahead of time, there should be a checkbox saying you allow the picture people or anyone else selling something to come into your room or not. If you're not interested, just don't check that box. Then they are not allowed to pitch anything to you.
Problem solved.
If you say no, let the nursing staff know. If they keep coming back, make sure your hospital survey reflects that. It's the nursing staff's job to make sure those people don't bother you if you have notified them that you don't want those types of visitors.
The newborn pictures are horrible...we skipped them with our DD and our failed adoption.

That sounds terrible! We had the exact opposite experience with Our 365. The photographer showed up just as they were taking the baby for her first exam, so she came back a few minutes later. At that point, another doctor had come in to the room to give me a blood patch for my botched epidural, so everyone had to leave the room besides DH and LO. The procedure took about 30 minutes and she waited the entire time outside, then only came back in when invited afterwards. She was very professional, got the photos done without much guidance from me (I was in too much pain), and even got a lovely photo of me and LO at the photographer's suggestion. Our photos came out great, but I was taken aback by all the packages to look at on the spot. We ended up getting the photo CD so we could have the rights to the photos.
But I definitely agree that no matter what the company, making unrequested sales pitches in the maternity ward is in bad form.
