Postpartum Depression

Can PPD come back?

I had PPD when DS was first born and with therapy and starting back on birth control it went away.

I think it's back.  I have an appointment on Monday with my OB to talk about it and do something with it.

Can PPD come back after it seems to have been gone?

  • i don't see why it couldn't come back.  good for you for making an appt to treat it again.

  • I agree, I think its great that you've got an appointment!

When I talked to my psychiatrist about how long he feels I should stay on my PPD meds, he said that research suggests that the longer one stays on their meds, the longer that they will remain not depressed.

My PPD was pretty severe (according to him) and he said that he'd like to see me stay on the meds for two or three years.  I do also have ADHD, but I don't think that factored into he suggestion.

Best of luck and I hope that you feel better soon!

  • Good question. DS will be 12 weeks on Friday. I got on lexapro right away and felt better quickly with the meds. I have been doing ok but sometimes have off days, like today. I just want to cry all day and feel very anxious.
  • To the mom taking lexapro... that drug in particular can actually increase anxiety (unfortunate, right), but you can take xanax with it if needed. I too have PPD. My child is now almost 11 months - at about 3 months I went back to work and the symptoms seemed to get better/go away. When I stopped working about a month ago they flooded back in worse than before. From what I've read, life changes and lack of support (both of which I'm experiencing) can make things a lot worse so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Good luck- it is a horrible horrible feeling, but you are not alone.
