Specific preschool question...

As many of you know, ds is speech delayed.  We received the paperwork this week to look into the possibilty of an IEP for speech.  If he qualifies, he is eligible for preschool with our local school district (West Clermont)

Anyway, has anyone gone this route?  Or does anyone know anything about West Clermont's preschool program?  I completely understand the IEP/ETR process due to my own job, but I don't know much about their program.

  • A few of my friends have used it, and they've had nothing short of amazing things to say about it.  Maybe it will even favor your opinion of the district and get you to stay.  ::crosses fingers::  Wink

We'll see about that one- part of our motive is to live closer to the ILs. I appreciate the kind words.  We're looking into it- but you're right, it may change my opinion.  We really like his daycare situation right now, so I haven't been very into the 'search for a preschool' thing like many of you.

  • I know very little... I called the Enrollment Office at WC to discuss having DD tested to see if she qualifies for PS (also because of her speech.)  They suggested I call back in April/May and get the paperwork.  Because of her age, they said they would wait until Aug to actually do the testing.  I also stopped by Clough Elementary and filled out an enrollment form to put her on the waiting list for a "typical" spot in case she doesn't qualify.  I heard it's very hard to get a typical spot so we are making other arrangements just in case she doesn't get a typical child spot and doesn't qualify because of her speech.

I've emailed with a few other moms who have had their child in the WC preschool and they RAVED about it.  In fact, I honestly haven't come across one negative comment.

  • I work for a similar program in a different district.  The public school preschools are made up of half "typically" developing children and the other half is children on IEPs.  The "typicals" are there as peer models (but all students end up benefiting from each other).  The therapists work with the children during the school day (no separate therapy time) and often work in the classroom as well.  All of the teachers are required to be licensed just as any other teacher in the district.  Also, teachers work with SLPs, OTs, and PTs in planning activities for all of the children that they work with.

Personally, I have always hoped to put my children in one of these programs (I had a lot of observation hours in these types of programs in both undergrad and grad school) in the future, even before I became a parent because of the qualifications required of the teachers and the fact that most of these classrooms are more developmentally appropriate than most that I have seen in private preschools.   I know that in our program the "typical" slots fill up very quickly because of the reputation that the program has.

I don't know if that helped or not but let me know if you have any more questions!

  • @klsteele- yes, this info is very helpful.

@kabel- I don't know much about WC's process, but HMG gave me the ETR form to fill out this past week, and the ETR meeting will probably be at the end of April.  I believe we'd be at Clough as well if we 1) qualify- at this point we're still really far behind, but things can change quickly, and 2) opt to go that route (which we probably will if we do qualify).  I know that part of the evaluation process is a "try out" day at the school on a Friday.  I don't know if that is something HMG does for its familes or all potential students...  I'd definitely be calling back in April if you want to go that route.
