Ear Infection?

What are the symptoms of an ear infection with your little ones?

DS has yet to have one (knock on wood!!) but he's had some different things going on this week where I'm wondering....  (but nothing obvious like pulling at the ear or all out screaming)

Re: Ear Infection?

  • DS had his first one last month, at 17 months. I thought he had one so many times before that.. Pulling on his ear (which my Dr said was probably due to teething..pain from mouth goes up to ear) fevers.. Colds... Never resulted in an ear infection.
One day he was super crabby and clingy. No fever, no cold.. No pulling on his ear. That night he was up a lot moaning and couldn't sleep. First ear infection... I was so surprised it came out of nowhere. I always thought a cold started it and a fever would appear.the only way he could sleep is if I held him upright..
    Hope that helps!

  • For J, they ALWAYS follow a cold/congestion, and he usually doesn't have any overt symptoms except for frequent night wakings (read: screaming).
  • Justin often has bouts of vomiting when he has an ear infection.  Typically both of my kids have a really snotty nose along with it, too.  Sometimes a fever, but usually low grade (like 99-100) when it happens.  They also don't eat as well.  Really whiny.

  • OK....  so is it worth trying to get his ears checked in the AM?

    - runny nose for a while now...  a little green when he wakes up, but not later

    - clingy

    - sound asleep right now (it's 6:30).  Oh, and he fell asleep sideways in his bed, which he hasn't done in probably a year.

    - not very hungry

    - nasty poo yesterday morning; not as nasty, but still nasty today- greenish and a little runny (not watery though)

    - tugging at one ear a little before he crashed earlier today

    -no fever

    WDYT?

In my opinion, I would take him in. With Jonah, his symptoms have been inconsistent from one ear infection to the next. He only had a fever with the very first one; he has never tugged at his ears; he's inconsistently fussy. So, when things are out of sorts, I jump to ear infection, because I've been right almost every time. I can't wait until he's old enough to at least point at what hurts!

I think you know your kiddo best.  I think the symptoms when all put together could add up to an ear infection.  I would go ahead and take him in......no reason for him to get more miserable.
