Special Needs

I didn't know this board was here...

I'm not sure if I'll fit in here but I thought I'd say hi. I'm usually on the 3rd Tri board. I have a 3 year old who was diagnosed with Apraxia and sometimes want to be able to talk about it without having to explain it all first so hopfully I can find someone here who knows about it.

  • You certainly belong!!

If you care to, you could post a little about DS and that way we know what his specific issues are when you need that chat time.  Most everyone here has a post somewhere explaining their SN.  Everyone is a bit different - no matter what the condition.

    Welcome!

  • Jordan is 3 and we knew around 2 that something was different about him. He didn't talk but understood everything around him, played normally and was very cuddly. We were told by many Dr's that it wasn't autism with was a hugh relief but still upseting because we couldn't help him till we knew waht he did have. We finally moved to Ohio last August and this past June we got an offical answer of Apraxia. With Apraxia he knows what he wants to say but his brain has trouble telling the muscles in his mouth and jaw how to form the words. He only has a few words he can say clearly at this point like mama, dada, baby, you, me, pee, poop, hi, and bye. He can't form most vowel sounds and hardly any others but he is getting better. He has intensive speech therapy 3 times a week which leaves him angry and frustrated but proud of himself.

Apraxia is hereditery and can cause learning disabilities if not treated. And baby Marley will probably have it too, but at least now we know and can catch it early. We believe it came from DH as he didn't talk till he was 5.

  • Yep, really that pregnant! If she doesn't come on her own by Wednesday we're going to induce. I'm actually holding up alright right now because I don't mind when she comes as long as she's healthy!

  • Welcome!  Your little guy is so cute!  I'm from OH (now in CA) and still have family in the Cinci area, Dayton, and Toledo.
  • Sorry to harp on the 42 week thing, but I'm proud of you for being ok with it!  I had no choice but to wait and wait b/c I was wanting a VBAC.  She finally came on her own the day b4 the C-S was scheduled.  I'll pray for the same with you!  Healthy baby dust to you!!!

Anyway, thanks for the intro of your family.  Very interesting. I'm so glad you caught it early with DS & you know what to look for in DD as well.  I googled Apraxia, but your explanation was MUCH easier to understand.

Welcome to the SN board.  We all need support of various kinds!
